Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-24-2018

Washington Herald, January 24, 1918:

The fall of Jerusalem was predicted by Jim Bagby of the Cleveland Indians’ hurling staff.

Time and again he told his teammates that a study of Scripture showed him that Jerusalem would fall by December. He also claimed that Scripture shows that the world war will end by February.

And when the news of Jerusalem’s fall was given to the world, Bagby sent cards to several members of the team, calling attention to what he had predicted last summer.

In addition to which Jim is a perfectly good pitcher.

Huh. Okay.

Not a ton to work with on today's Birthday Team. Jose Quintana is likely a month or two away from becoming the January 24 career WAR leader. To be fair, Quintana's a good pitcher, but you wouldn't necessarily be excited to have him as the best player on your roster.

C: Tyler Flowers (7.31 WAR)
1B: Wally Judnich (15.21 WAR)
2B: Whit Merrifield (5.47 WAR)
3B: Dave Brain (11.5 WAR)
SS: Stu Clarke (0.46 WAR)
LF: Andy Dirks (4.18 WAR)
CF: Cliff Heathcote (10.65 WAR)
RF: Bunk Congalton (5.58 WAR)

SP: Scott Kazmir (22.81 WAR)
SP: Jose Quintana (22.43 WAR)
SP: Atlee Hammaker (8.47 WAR)
SP: Neil Allen (6.97 WAR)
SP: Curly Ogden (4.5 WAR)
RP: Rob Dibble (9.59 WAR)
RP: Tim Stoddard (4.81 WAR)

Owners: Jean Yawkey, Walter Haas
Play-by-play: Jack Brickhouse
Beat writer: Ray Kelly
Fun names: Johnny Dickshot, Pop Rising
Nepotist: Mike Glavine

By 1917, predicting the fall of anything was probably a pretty good bet.

I remember Tim Stoddard as being a giant of a man on the 1984 Cubs. At the time, I think he was the only player ever to both win a World Series and win an NCAA basketball championship.

He and Sutcliffe were pretty similar - big men, big beards.

I'm reading a new book right now on the beginnings of chemical warfare, in the U.S. context, during World War I. Harrowing stuff.

he never won a WS--he was on the 1979 Orioles who lost to the Pirates

I've always found it funny that asphyxiating a soldier with gas is considered so horrific, but blowing him to smithereens with HE is considered AOK.

If you actually look at the casualty reports, something like mustard gas is fairly humane. It produces a much higher proprtions of wounds vs. deaths, and the wounded tend to recover, and not be debilitated for life.

And now there are two men who played in a World Series and a Final Four. Stoddard and Kenny Lofton, who both graduated from the same now-closed Indiana High School (East Chicago Washington).

In that case I wonder if anyone won both a WS and a NCAA championship. None of these guys did. Dick Groat was voted college basketball player of the year, but Duke didn't win championships back then.

Stoddard was on the 1983 Orioles as well. He didn't pitch in the postseason, but the team did win the WS.

All I can say is, thank God we got Timmy Stoddard coming in out of the bullpen right now sticking the bat up their ###es, and that's what it takes.

I played basketball and football with Atlee (caught a TD from him!). Anyway, he looked like he was going to be a great one early on.

I wonder if he's on Twitter.

Hammaker is Yan Gomes's father-in-law, for what it's worth.

I think I was born in the same hospital where Stoddard and Lofton were born. They hogged all the St. Catherine's hospital athletic talent. #######.

#6. Exposed persons may be permanently disfigured as a result of chemical burns or are rendered permanently blind. Others develop chronic respiratory diseases or infections, which can be fatal. And because mustard gas damages the DNA in human cells, recovered victims are at greater risk for developing certain cancers. Pregnant women exposed to the gas have an increased risk of delivering a baby with birth defects or cancer

HE are lethal to those in close proximity by chemical weapons can cover vastly greater areas and affect more civilians as well

What did Bagby send his teammates when the war failed to end in February?
