Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-4-2013

Tacoma Times, January 4, 1913:

Amos Russie [sic], one time world famous baseball pitcher for the New York Giants, is in the county jail today on the charge of threatening to kill his wife, who is paralyzed in the lower limbs.

Russie is said to have driven his wife and little daughter out of their home Thursday evening. He was arrested after threatening to kill his wife, daughter and a relative named Mrs. Cuts. Russie works for the Seattle Gas company.

Well, that’s not good.

Most people don't know this, but the Rusie incident described above was actually in the inspiration for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

(Note: Most people don't know this because it is not, in fact, true.)

Well this is true, and odd. Tito Fuentes set a career high in with triples in his 12th ML season, as a 33 year old. That has to be a record. It would be like Matt Holliday hitting 10 triples this year.

Birthday League update:

The top of the standings:
January 23 20 10 .667 ----
January 14 21 12 .636 1.5
January 5 20 13 .606 2.5
January 28 20 13 .606 2.5
* There's a six-way tie for the home run lead: George Selkirk (January 4), Jason Giambi (January 8), Mike Marshall (January 12), Jim Lindeman (January 10), Tony Solaita (January 15), and Paul Ratliff (January 23) all have seven dingers.

* Rip Radcliff (January 19) leads the league with a .389 batting average. Bob Nieman (January 26) is second, at .385. Selkirk, Johnny Mize (January 7), and Elmer Flick (January 11) are all hitting above .360.

* Otis Nixon (January 9) leads the league with 45 hits and 30 stolen bases in 32 games.

* The cream is rising to the top on the RC/27 leaderboard: Mize, Brady Anderson (January 18), Dave Marshall (January 14), Selkirk, Brian Giles (January 20), Flick, Nieman, Giambi.

* Selkirk leads the league with 78 total bases. Giambi, in second place, has 68.

* Mark Littell (January 17) leads the league in walks allowed, strikeouts, and wild pitches.

Stats, standings, leaders, and box scores here.

Have we figured out what happens with February 29th? (My idea: a draft among the other February teams.)

(My idea: a draft among the other February teams.)

But Feb 29 is "stealing" from March 1 so March should get the extras.

The "fairest" thing is probably to drop them altogether.

A 28 team league that is setup with three divisions of 10, 9 and 9 teams? That's odd.
