Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-11-2014

Pittsburgh Press, February 11, 1914:

The retirement of Johnny Evers as manager of the Chicago Cubs jarred every magnate attending the war conference and annual meetings [in New York] today. Evers insists he was fired, and declares he will not play with the Cubs. [Cubs owner Charles] Murphy told the magnates his manager had resigned, and at his request Hank O’Day was relieved of his duty as an umpire and was then announced as Evers’ successor.

BULLETIN

James E. Gaffney, owner of the Boston Braves, confirmed the report that he had offered $25,000 cash to Murphy, of Chicago, for Johnny Evers. “I’ve instructed Manager Stallings to offer anything up to $25,000 for Evers,” said Gaffney today. “If he gets him, it will be money well spent.”

Uh, Charlie, you know Spring Training starts in a couple weeks, right? Maybe not the best time to fire your manager and run your future Hall of Fame second baseman out of town on a rail.

Evers went to Boston for Bill Sweeney and cash, won the World Series and the MVP award in his first season in Beantown, and the Cubs continued to be the Cubs.

Giving weight for the era he played, I think Downtown Ollie Brown has to be among the top ten baseball names.

Ed Walsh, Sr. outlived his son by almost 22 years.

A player named Bunny Brief died 51 years ago today. My mom died 11 years ago, but she didn't make it out of the minor leagues.

I will hopefully save someone the ignominy that befell me at the 2012 SABR trivia contest:

It is pronounced Johnny EE-vurrs.

A friend of mine e-mailed me once, calling something a real "Tinker-to-Evans-to-Chance" combination. Oh, how I laughed to myself as I replied.

I don't know if it ranks in the "top" baseball names... but Yorvit Torrealba is.... something...

I remember the awful attempts of various USSMariner posters to give him the nickname JoeJessica when he was a Mariner in 2005. Thankfully didn't take.

I'd hate to see the last vestiges of the Wolf Pack. They would be dragging a hind leg with a half-bitten off tail and 3 wobbly teeth at this point.

He was fun to watch in his prime -- he only had so much to offer but he gave it all.

EDIT: That wasn't well described. He had good stuff, but not an overwhelming arsenal.

#10-- I fear that when Randy Wolf retires, baseball will never again see another player & umpire brother combo again!

I'm still trying to get the nickname "F-bomb" to take for Kosuke Fukudome. Never say die!

Suk-Min Yoon has probably signed with the Orioles.

Doesn't anyone find it ironic/suspicious that Evers was replaced by Hank O'Day, given the events of 1908?
