Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-15-2012

Sporting Life, February 17, 1912:

President William Abbott Witman, of the United States League, is out with a statement in which he says the new league will abandon slavery in base ball. there will be no reserve clause in the contracts…so that it will be possible for [players] to go where they please at the end of every season. Beautiful dream that.
...

Its no-slavery platform and no-slavery stuff is great in the abstract, but the bunk elsewhere. Cut the reserve rule, and Cobb, Johnson, Lajoie, and such other players…would all be in New York, where the chances for biggest money are, while their present owners would be doing the best they could.

Prescience, thy name is The Sporting Life.

The All-Star game is in KC this year and I'd love to go. Looking at ticket broker prices, they're about $700 each for the cheap seats. Am I better off waiting closer to the day of for prices to go down or is demand high enough that prices will remain high? What is generally a good price for just the ASG itself (I don't care about the HR derby or any of that stuff). Any advice?

Today's trivia: Notable opening day feats, Non-HOF division. All answers are non-HOFers (so far). Most of these names should be familiar with most primates. Let's see how many I can screw up today. Please phrase you answer in iambic pentameter.

1 - Managed his final game on opening day.

2 - No hits through 9, gave up a hit in the 10th and lost the game in 12 on opening day.

3 - Hit opening day grand slams in non-consecutive years. Hint: Not Grover Cleveland Alexander

4 - Pitched in the first ever games for both the Pilots and Mariners. HINT: Son played in first game at Safeco Field.

5 - Last starting pitcher to make his ML debut on opening day (as a starting pitcher if that's not clear). HINT: You either know it or you don't

6 - Famous Yankee made his pinstripe debut with 2 HR on opening day.

7 - Famous Yankee made his ML debut with 2 hits in his first 2 AB's, in the same inning, on opening day

8 - Athletics franchise leader in opening day starts. HINT: Not an All Star, not an award winner, career record under .500.

9 - Opening day win was his last of the season. Went 1-16 overall

10 - Played in the last Giants game in the Polo Grounds, and the first Mets game in the Polo Grounds. Hint: Not THAT one

11 - Pitched an opening day one hitter, and then another one in his next start. HINT: Only player to play in and umpire in an ASG (not at the same time obviously).

12 - Only 3 players with 3 HR games on opening day. HINT: I was at one of these games.

13 - 5 years removed from his ML debut, got his first 4 hits on opening day playing for his 6th organization. HINT: Has an outside shot at the HOF

14 - Lost opening day games for both Washington Senators franchises. HINT: Was NOT involved in the first All Cuban triple play.

15 - Opening day RF starter for Pirates in first game after Roberto Clemente's death

5 is Al Gerhauser (though I might have spelled that wrong). IIRC, three players in ML history debuted as a starting pitcher and he was the last, in 194something (44? 43?).

1943. Well done.

Damn, I was going to guess Mayberry.

I'll say the answer to all the rest is Frank Stallone.

I don't know what else to say about #19. Like #5, either you've heard of him or you haven't. I'd never heard of the guy till yesterday. Pretty cool though, only career HR was as a pinch hitter in his first AB.

Well, there you go. I knew I had to screw up at least one. Pretty freaky that Bichette also fits the clues.

Gerhauser played a long time in the minor leagues, on both sides of his MLB career. For some reason, I always like knowing about guys like that.

Yeah. Harry Coveleski is the answer. I thought for sure someone would have guessed Joe Niekro first.

The last guy from #19 is one of those. Well, long time on one side. Played MLB ball at 21 and 22. Played in the minors till 35, with stops at Mt. Airy, NC, Galax, VA, Martinsville, VA, and Welch, WV.

Billy was neither a born liar nor a convicted one. He's the one who said it (about Reggie and George)

Ah. I thought it was Sparky or Graig who said it about Billy and Reggie.
