BALL PLAYERS TO BE SOLDIERS

American Leaguers Will Be Given Instruction in Handling a Gun This Spring

American league baseball parks during the playing season are to be turned into military training camps and the players are to devote one hour a day to instruction. The league has adopted a resolution which provides that the players shall shoulder rifles as well as baseball bats.

Between Crowley, Hairston and Darwin, the theme for today's team seems to be marginal corner outfielders from the 1970s.

Charlie Root threw a five-hit shutout at the Robins on 8/16/1927, the Cubs beating them 3-0 at Ebbets Field.

The Brooklyn second baseman that day was Chuck Corgan, a 24-year-old three-sport star (football, basketball, baseball) out of the University of Arkansas, who had been coaching at first base for Wilbert Robinson while struggling with injuries. Corgan had less than a year to live. "Cancer developed from an injury received by being struck by a batted ball," his obituary would say in June 1928. (That's medically unlikely, if not impossible, but was a belief of some clinicians in the 20s.)
