Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-19-2018

Bridgeport Times, February 19, 1918:

An overseas professional baseball organization to be composed of six clubs and to be known as the Anglo-American League has been launched, according to W.A. Parsons, who was in [Bridgeport] yesterday on a hunt for players.
...
London, Paris and Brighton are sure of places in the league. Three clubs will be located at camps—with representation likely for Aix-les-Bains and Vichy, recreation centres for American troops. The league will play a five-month season, opening on April 1 and closing on Sept. 1.

If this league had worked out, road trips to Vichy would have been a bit awkward in the first half of the 1940s.

A weak Birthday Team today. A couple times a year, I'm reminded that two different people named Bob Sadowski played in the big leagues in 1963. The odds against that have to be astronomical.

C: Chris Stewart (2.15 WAR)
1B: Gail Hopkins (3.2 WAR)
2B/Manager: John Morrill (23.08 WAR)
3B: Chuck Aleno (-0.59 WAR)
SS: Alvaro Espinoza (3.98 WAR)
LF: Dick Siebert (7.85 WAR)
CF: Don Taussig (0.39 WAR)
RF: Josh Reddick (22.93 WAR)

SP: Dave Stewart (26.84 WAR)
SP: Miguel Batista (12.7 WAR)
SP: Tom Earley (1.09 WAR)
SP: Bob Sadowski (1.01 WAR)
SP: Weldon Wyckoff (-0.3 WAR)
RP: Tim Burke (12.44 WAR)
RP: Dan Otero (5.54 WAR)
RP: Keith Atherton (4.56 WAR)

Fun name: Uke Clanton
Scout/Fun name/Place where you lay down after you drop acid: Trip Couch
Broadcaster: Dave Niehaus
General Manager: Walt Jocketty

Records for most times achieving this exact box-score line; today's are 3-for-3 with no RBIs. Regular season (since 1908, now, apparently), ab/r/h/bi.

3 0 3 0 : Done five times each by Bob Bailey and Brian McCann. That's … kinda random. The common factor is that they are good hitters with long careers who didn't run the bases very well.

3 1 3 0 : George Brett, 8 times

3 3 3 0 : George Ruth, 3 times

3 4 3 0 : 38 players did this once, most recently AJ Pollock in 2015

3 5 3 0 : six players did this once, most recently Cody Ransom in 2007

That leaves 3 2 3 0, the only one with any trivia possibilities. Five players achieved a 3230 line four times. Three are Hall of Famers and one will be as soon as eligible. In roughly chronological order (at least by their final years, not by breaking in necessarily), with some soft-toss hints:

A) setter of a basic, important single-season record
B) associated more with flavors of icecream than with baseball
C) associated almost as much with varieties of chicken as with baseball
D) associated unfortunately with the contents of his back pocket while on the basepaths
E) breaker of the record set by (A)

A - Sisler
C - Boggs
D - Raines
E - Ichiro!

But I can't think of anyone named Creamsicle.

Sisler, Boggs, Raines, and Ichiro are all correct.

Fantasy baseball question: Should the humidor news out of Arizona materially increase my valuation of Robbie Ray?

B = Howard Johnson?

HoJo is correct!

As opposed to the 3030 guys, the 3230s (aside from Boggs) were excellent baserunners.

HoJo is correct!

Ah, I was wondering when Baskin Robbins played MLB.

Tim Burke was the man in 1987, the year of the rabbit ball. Three HR allowed in 91 innings.

Wow, Uke Clanton (a 1920s first baseman) played one game (and had just one at-bat) in the major leagues but played 1,116 games in the minors (mostly for Terre Haute in the 3-I league).

Clanton too became a scout. From Oklahoma, he managed in the post-WW2 Sooner State League and eventually became its president.

Instead of HoJo i thought of Rocky Roe.

Nate I think the news on Arizona means something maybe 10% on Ray bit control is his issue so maybe if he nibbled less at home he might really come forward. Maybe check his home road walk rates and see if his walk rate is worse at home.

His home problems have manifested more with allowing more hits at home, rather than more walks.

The Braves DFA'd Mauricio Cabrera, a guy who can hit 103 but has lousy command and pitches to contact ... last year to the point of walking (a lot) more than he K'd in both AA and AAA. Still, he seems like a good fit for the Marlins and their desire for cheap bodies.

If this league had worked out, road trips to Vichy would have been a bit awkward in the first half of the 1940s.

Not as awkward as the trips to Paris. (And Vienna, and Prague, and Warsaw, and...)
