Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-22-2012

A few interesting blurbs from the newspapers of 100 years ago today:

El Paso Herald, February 22, 1912:

Ty Cobb sews a sheepskin into his trousers to save his hide when he slides. Manager Jimmy Callahan, it is said, has ordered a carload of fleeces from the Chicago stock yards for his base stealers…The death of Jimmy Doyle probably will upset plans for a Chicago-Boston trade that involved several players, Doyle among them.

Cross him off, then.

Washington Times, February 22, 1912:

We hear a lot about “swell” third basemen, but the only “swell” third baseman we ever saw was big Ed Gremminger, once with Boston, whose waist line approximated sixty inches.

Today is the 10,000 "day-versary" of one of the greatest clutch postseason performances in MLB history. A guy posted a WPA of 0.854 (third best by any batter in any postseason game) by going 4-for-5 with a walk-off home run. Based on that, can you guess what the game was and who the batter is before clicking on the link?

The team would really come together in their hatred of owner Charlie Finley.

And as Rob Dibble could tell you, it's a bad idea to anger Eric Yelding.

Is today the first day players can go on the 60-day DL? That would explain the rash of major league deals.

The Pirates put their R5 pick on it two days ago.

I presume so - John Lackey was placed on the DL today. Rich Harden can't be far behind.

I like that move. Obviously he could be hurt or sucky, but he's had some good years, and the Yankees have had sucess getting strong seasons out of unexpected bullpen performers (see: Wade, Cory and Ayala, Luis, among others) since Girardi took over.
   19. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: February 22, 2012 at 04:59 PM (#4066396)
Aardsma won't pitch til at least mid-season.

Bobby Jenks was placed on the 60-day DL yesterday, and Gustavo Nunez, who hasn't played in the major leagues, was DLed on Monday.

Today would have been my grandfather's 107th birthday (yes, his middle name was Washington). He was a lifelong baseball fan -- one of his brothers tried out for the NY Giants and Philadelphia A's -- and he was at Shibe Park for Game 4 of the 1929 Series when the A's scored 10 runs in the 7th. And tying this all together, Jimmy Dykes lived across the street from him for many years.

Jay Gibbons to MIL (same)
Jon Garland no longer with Cleveland (skipped physical)

Detroit Free-Press, February 22, 2012:

We hear a lot about “swell” third basemen, but the only “swell” third baseman we see is Miguel Cabrera, once at first base, whose waist line approximates sixty inches.
