Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-6-2018

Ogden Standard, February 6, 1918:

[Ketchikan, Alaska] claims a unique baseball diamond. When baseball players of this southern Alaska city schedule games they always take tide conditions into consideration for the park is built on the flats below the city and at high tide the playing ground and lower seats of the grand stand are under water…Long games are often called on account of rising tides.

I imagine they had their own version of the Baltimore chop, hit sharply downward so the ball gets stuck in the mud in front of home plate.

Not a ton of depth on today's Birthday Team, but I think they'll be just fine. The center fielder seems pretty good.

Travis Wood could also probably contribute more than Allen as a LF on his off days.

Spike Lee is exactly as old as John McGraw was the day he died (22,238 days).

Charlize Theron is exactly as old as George Steinbrenner was the day he bought the New York Yankees (15,524 days).

Anyone who wants to can look up as-old-as items for their own lives here.

Kid Gleason on celluloid John Mahoney died. Because he played Kelsey Grammer's father, I was surprised that he was only 77.

1) Also on today's Birthday Team:

1930s Cubs broadcaster: Ronald Reagan

2) Until the Bambino got his birth certificate in order to acquire a passport in 1933, he thought he was born on February 7th, 1894. Whom would he have displaced on tomorrow's Birthday Team?
