Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-14-2012

Washington Times, March 14, 1912:

Manager Griffith does not intend to have any games postponed this year because of wet grounds. At the least sign of wet weather a huge canvas cover will be spread over the diamond. “Doubleheaders are bad things,” says the Old Fox, “and I’m going to try and have as few as possible.”

Today is 25,000 days since the big league debut of Gil Hodges. He was the first notable position player on the 1950s Dodgers to make it to the show.

I don't think I'd ever heard of Marty McManus before...and he was pretty good, like you said, solid. That'll teach him never to have played in the postseason.
