Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-19-2014

Pittsburgh Press, March 19, 1914:

Manager Jack Hayden of the Louisville Colonels, during his team’s training season at Fort Myers, Fla. has invested in a 10-acre tract of land that he will have planted immediately to grape fruit. In about three years Jack imagines that he will not care what happens in baseball.

Well, he was sort of right. Hayden was relieved of his duties as the Colonels’ manager in May 1915. Shortly after he left Louisville, he was named the manager of the Frankfort (Kentucky) Old Taylors in the Class D Ohio State league, but 1915 was his final season in pro ball. The huge tract of land and grapefruit plantation apparently didn’t work out, as he wound up selling meat in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

There's some disagreement about Joe McGinnity's birthdate, and today's Birthday Team gets the short end of the Iron Man stick. I generally go with the date listed at BBRef, unless I have a good reason not to.

To continue with the Davo's only connection to the sport of baseball is through trivia theme of yesterday, I'll point out that Gee Walker remains the only player in baseball history to hit for the cycle on opening day, Mike Norris once went 0 and 12 over a 12-start stretch, Bill Wambsganss turned the only unassisted triple play in postseason history, and Ivan Calderon is one of three players to steal 30+ bases AND ground into 25+ double plays in the same season (with John Wathan and Brandon Phillips).

To have that kind of speed and ground into that many double plays, you've gotta be just drilling the ball right at people.

Or, at least, that's the excuse I used when I became the first player in the history of slow-pitch softball to ground into a DP. I absolutely crushed the ball, as hard as I've ever hit a ball in my life, on one hop to the second baseman.

That plus my absolutely glacial footspeed caused some serious embarrassment.

Not to overestimate your foot speed or anything but Tony Fernandez, a pretty fast player, grounded into lots of dps. Hitting the ball on hard on the ground will do that.

If you estimate my footspeed, there's a 99.96% chance you've overestimated it. If (God forbid) Cecil Fielder broke both legs today, I'd lose a 100-yard dash to him if it was held tomorrow.

Cleveland's fifth starter competition appears to be down to Carlos Carrasco, Josh Tomlin, and Aaron Harang. Sounds like Carrasco is in the lead because he doesn't have any options left.

According to the linked article, Shaun Marcum isn't 100% yet and Trevor Bauer needs to go to Columbus for what feels like his fourth consecutive year of fine-tuning.

Josh Phegley was hitting .278/.270/.611 after his first 10 career big-league games last year. That's one helluva line.

Also, Richie Ashburn was the first leadoff batter to lead his league in batting average and walks in the same season (1958)...
