Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-1-2013

Washington Times, March 1, 1913:

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C., March 1.—Angry feelings have been aroused among the Phillies by the announcement of the golf club here that players must not be found on the links. It is said that the order is the result of a complaint lodged by a society golfer who said he was disturbed in his driving by comments from several players. Manager Dooin will endeavor to have the rule lifted before real trouble begins.

Is that a threat?

Not much power on today's Birthday Team. The all-time leader in home runs among players born March 1 is Ramon Castro with 67. Among players picked for the starting nine, Paul Hines leads the way with 57 career dingers. When a 19th century player is your biggest home run threat...that's not good.

100 years ago today in the Ogden Evening Standard:
There may be beer drinkers on the Chicago Cubs, but no cigarette smokers, at least not until the close of the season...Evers will not permit their use at any time.
Seriously, Mr. Fudge Orgies and Nicotine Sprees? You're banning smoking?

Anyone been to BBREF today? Click on any of the player links above. I hope that's not a permanent format change. It's unreadable.

Heh, my grandfather would have been 17 when Farmer Vaughn became a regular for the Reds. I wonder if he was a fan of the farmer. That is one obscure set of position players.

BBREF is down all of a sudden. Maybe it's getting fixed, Misirlou.

OK, looks back to normal. For a while there the font was white on charcoal backround, with the totals and sub totals white on off white.

THT historical item notes that today is 10,000 days since the most unlikely walk-off homer in postseason baseball history. Can you guess who hit it before clicking on the link?

I finally got one. And I went crazy, folks.

BBREF was down a few times for me yesterday. I almost did some of the work I'm paid for.

Bucky F. Dent?

I think that's the mid-80s. Ozzie?

Yea, I think Rusty Kuntz gave it away.

Yesterday we talked about entire infields, or DP combos playing for two different teams (or more).

Has an entire outfield ever played for two different teams?

Bucky F. Dent?
The Dent HR did not, technically, come in a playoff game, right?

It wasn't a walk-off homer, either.

Does anyone know of a decent softball league in Montgomery county, Maryland that's looking for players?

Sounds like an early plot synopsis treatment for "Three Little Beers."

We've lost our three power-hitting OFs from last year in our intramural league in Mongomery County, PA, and so are in desperate need but that's as close as I can come to helping you. If my semi-arthritic 61 yo knees have to spend any more time in OF, we are in deep shiite.

You can rest easy in the knowledge that the Phillies are determined to put anyone at all in right field over Domonic Brown. At this point, I’m convinced that he could step into the batter’s box, point his bat at the pitcher and yell “They still want an American to go, Doctor. You wanna take a ride?” then hit the first pitch he sees 500 feet, and the Phillies would still have him start the season in AAA or in a platoon.

I believe that when the end of the world comes, we, as a society, will be made to answer for our sins, and that chief among them will be the way the Phillies have developed, or neglected to develop, Domonic Brown.

I imagine most people have already seen it, but did anyone ever link to this catch? 'Cause, holy smokes - and right after missing a year with a knee injury (Brett Williams, NC State).

That was one sweet catch.
