Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-28-2013

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, March 28, 1913:

BALL PLAYER KILLS CHUM.

“I’d bet I can blow your block off without hurting you,” said William Millius in the bar room of the Central House at Millerton, Dutchess county, tonight, and then picking up a double barreled shotgun he blew off the top of the head of Ted Wolf. Death was instantaneous.
...
[Millius] was to have gone to Hackensack, N.J. tomorrow to be given a tryout as pitcher on the Troy team of the New York State League.

Detectives believe alcohol was involved.

It doesn’t appear that Millius ever played organized pro ball, but murdering people does tend to make a player less desirable.

BALL PLAYER KILLS CHUM.

Too bad. They were a great radio station back in the day.

As noted at THT, today is also the 25th anniversary of Gene Mauch retiring.

The last time, I think, that I ever scored a ball game was the one in which I missed Willie Mays running over Jim Coker because I was trying to get the numbers right. Coker was never much after that collision. Of course, he wasn't much before that collision.

I hate when Albert Belle, Chris Truby and Steve N post a comment that screams for snark, but they finish their post with the very snark I wanted to post!

Wow... Glenn Davis would challenge Barry Bonds' walk totals on that team...

Coker hit .313 for the '64 Reds in just 32 ABs (so, 10-for-32), with a decent slugging %, and somehow made it into the APBA set as one of the five extra cards per team, even though Johnny Edwards and Don Pavletic were already on the team. Lineup abuse in APBA leagues followed.

Gorkys Hernandez (out of options) didn't make the Fish - they are trying to find a trade, may release him.
Houston plans on using a tandem rotation at all full season minor league levels this year. I am surprised that they would do this at AAA.

Brad Peacock made their MLB rotation. I didn't see that coming.

I can't imagine there's a ton of demand for "outfielder in his mid 20s who has no power, doesn't hit for average, and is fast but not a consistently good base stealer", though I've been wrong before.

He's a better fielder, less runner than Tony Campana - who yielded two lotto tickets from the Snakes...

Luhnow started this in the A-ball affiliates with the Cardinals, but he ran into resistance from pretty much every possible angle. In an organization where he's unquestionably in charge, it doesn't surprise me that he's expanding the scope as wide as it can go.

AAA strikes me as too far, unless you're curious about implementing it in the bigs.

Who else is doing it this year? Baltimore...

Unless he thinks it hurts Bud Norris's trade value, I would think he would've done it by now if he was curious. Maybe he's waiting for July, when they're 30 games out.

I can't blame Luhnow. When I go to minor league games, it's always struck me that there are seven guys in the bullpen dreaming of having Mike Crudale's career.

nope.

i like that teams are trying to be creative in challenging the traditional model of pitcher usage, but this is not the right method.
