Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-4-2014

Rock Island Argus, March 4, 1914:

The Three Eye baseball fields may be shy on the cattle range stuff this season. Announcement is made that the big cut out bulls of the Bull Durham company may be taken out of the fields…

The players may be shy considerable real money and tons of smoking tobacco because of the pleasurable and profitable pastime - hitting the bull - and lofting homers over the fences. Word has been received…that the tobacco company is contemplating giving up this form of advertising and putting the money into newspaper advertising.

If you hit the bull, you win a prize.

Elsewhere, the New York Tribune reports that if Bill Bradley doesn't manage the Brooklyn Federal League club, team secretary Walter Ward says he may just pick a tourist from the Lusitania. This may have been an option in 1914, but ceased to be a possibility in 1915.

I would have picked Leron Lee over Bruce Aven as the right fielder on today's BD team. Their MLB records are pretty nondescript; Lee played 614 games with an OPS+ of 95, while Aven played 259 games with an OPS+ of 100. But Lee's prime was spent as one of the best American players ever in Japan - 11 years of .320/.382/.542, with 283 home runs. He held the career records for hits and home runs by a foreign player until Tuffy Rhodes broke both of them.

Rakuten (NPB) - LHP Loek Van Mil, RHP Sergio Mitre

Last Expo candidate / reinvigorated knuckleball pitcher Tomo Ohka was demoted from the Jays' major league camp. He'll start the season in AA.

Question I want answered but don't want to do a search for: I read A Day in the Bleachers last weekend. My copy has an afterword written in 2004. Hano writes "Durocher is dead, although he lasted well into his eighty-sixth year. (Very well, indeed, judging by five marriages and two penile implants.)"

To which I properly said "WTF?" This site informed me of Leo's "When you go out on a date, wait ten minutes then grab her ####. That way you don't waste any time" strategy, but I'd never heard anything about his, uh, enhancements. Was this common knowledge?

#5: Never heard of that. I also wonder why penile implants are indicative of a life well lived. Does Hano think it wears out with excessive use and has to be replaced?

So Jon Singleton is a pothead. The comments section is hilarious, then sad, then scary, and just back to sad again. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10548670/jon-singleton-houston-astros-discusses-marijuana-addiction

There was a thread here in 2008 that mentioned Durocher's implant. The thread was about Milt Pappas complaining about something.
