Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-5-2012

New York Tribune, March 5, 1912:

Work on the new home of the Brooklyn Baseball Club was formally begun yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock, when Charles H. Ebbets, president and chief owner of the club, turned the first spadeful of earth with a silver spade and christened the park Ebbets Field. A gathering of loyal “fans” some five hundred strong witnessed the ceremony, and Mr. Ebbets was showered with the good wishes of the crowd for a team worthy of the new park.

Brooklyn won the pennant in 1916 and 1920. I’d say they got their wish, at least in the short term.

On the same page of the same newspaper:
Philadelphia, March 4. -- Kevin Saunders, a fourteen-year-old boy of Springfield, Ohio, was picked up by the local police this morning and told a story of how John J. McGraw had hired him to be the mascot of the Giants this season.
...
When Kevin heard that the Giants were about to start South he ran away from the Knights of Pythias Home at Springfield and started beating his way East. He got only this far to learn that the Giants are in Texas.

The police purpose to send a telegram to McGraw to ascertain if his "mascot" shall be forwarded.

Or you could use this guy at first - 486 homers, Japanese HoF, and coolest of all, his "fighting spirit" was directly responsible for the nickname of his team - the Nippon Ham Fighters...

Reading Osugi's bio, I saw that he hit an in-season record of 3 sayonara home runs. Sayonara home run is much cooler than walk-off home run.

No spring training chatter, so I'm putting this here: Albert Pujols looks good so far.
