Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-10-2012

Dan Brouthers on Dad Clarke, El Paso Herald, April 10, 1912:

“As all oldtimers know, Clarke lost out with the old Chicago club because he obeyed Anson‘s signals. Strange but true—the old man had told him that a cough would be the signal to make a quick throw to first, and, during morning practice, Uncle [Anson] thoughtfully coughed—a real, and not an artificial cough.  Clarke immediately drove the ball across, and caught [Anson] in the Adam’s apple.  Clarke beat the old man to the rear fence of the park by just two jumps, and never returned to change his uniform.

Clarke’s reaction to a Brouthers grand slam:

‘You’re a paid agent of the big league magnates, you are, and they hire you to go around the country spoling the chances of promising young pitchers like me. You knock the ball over the fence, like you done today, you big ___ ____, and then the magnates, using them scores to prove their cases, refuse to pay any decent salaries to us when they get us…If I was as big as you, I’d darned soon knock your nose flat, you spy, you traitor, you buster up of good men’s livelihoods!’

Once again, I feel the need to mention that they don’t make threats or insults the way they used to.

That's a pretty darn good outfield. The left side of the infield is pretty shaky, but today's Birthday Team has five legitimately good major league hitters and a solid (if unspectacular) pitching staff.

Too good not to post, from the newspapers of 100 years ago today:
El Paso Herald:
"Killing the umpire" will not be in fashion this season. Fans are wising up to the fact that most umpires from their positions three feet away from a play can see it better than the man in the grandstand.
Toledo News-Bee:
If you haven't particularly good control, don't hurl a pop bottle at either of the arbiters. You might skull one of our own most able athletes.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first MLB game at Dodger Stadium. It's had about 147,000,000 in official attendance in that time. Only one stadium has had more. Can you guess what that place is? You can click on the link above to see if you're right.

Yesterday, I had a full-length article up at THT: Extra Innings: A response. Steve Goldman wrote a chapter in the new Prospectus book on evaluating managers that offers some criticisms of my book (Evaluating Baseball's Managers, so I wanted to respond.

Yesterday at the Rockies home opener, it was noted that Coors Field is the 3rd oldest park in the NL. Both that and that Dodger Stadium is the 3rd oldest park in the majors feel really weird.

That's good stuff, Dag. It is my personal opinion that managers can have far more influence than we generally give them credit for in shaping players' careers, which is of course hard to quantify but can have a huge impact on a team's performance. Look at the way Albert Belle exploded once Jerry Manuel took over the White Sox and started talking to him for hours before every game. Or the totally non-obvious decision by Tony LaRussa to make Dennis Eckersley a closer. Or the way Aramis Ramirez career rebounded after Dusty Baker took him over.

We really need to go to the daily single-thread chatter format, or at least have it as an option.

Dag, I was just flipping through the bit in EBM on Guillen and was wondering if you'd anything new to add on him?

I also like the omni chatter idea.

Tom - thanks.

Der K - well, I wouldn't say that Guillen is as safely entrenched as any manager in teh game anymore. Got that one off the mark. I'll do more with the "closest thing we have nowadays to Billy Martin." One thing I did figure out about a year or two ago: Guillen routinely has some of the worst offensive benches in the league.

Yogi...uhh, Larry Bowa on MLB Network earlier: "Matt Moore is going to be a great young pitcher for years to come"
