Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-12-2018

Toledo News-Bee, April 12, 1918:

Mel Wolfgang, who suffered last year from the effects of poison ivy, contracted at Paso Robles, Cal., has fully recovered and says he’s ready to pitch big league baseball. Mel was carried, not for what he was doing, but for what Pants Rowland knew he could do.

Must have been a hell of a poison ivy outbreak if it was newsworthy that Wolfgang had recovered in the offseason. I know he was a redhead and I know their skin can be particularly susceptible to stuff like poison ivy.

Mellie was a tiny spitballer, 5’7” on a good day if he was wearing platform shoes and he jumped on a trampoline while they measured him with a wonky tape measure. He was a good pitcher when he was healthy; Wolfgang put up a 1.92 ERA (145 ERA+) in 300 innings between 1914-1916 before the poison ivy caught up to him.

Today's Birthday Team is extremely pitching heavy. The fifth starter put up 17.1 WAR, nearly as much as the top position player (17.9). And once you factor in the positional adjustment we'd cause by moving Lo Duca to first base, that puts all of the starting pitchers ahead of all of the position players.

C: Mike Macfarlane (14.65 WAR)
1B: Paul Lo Duca (17.94 WAR)
2B: Terry Harmon (1.93 WAR)
3B: Charlie Pick (4.32 WAR)
SS: Eric McNair (5.07 WAR)
LF: Buster Hoover (1.87 WAR)
CF: Justin Ruggiano (2.3 WAR)
RF: Walt Moryn (9.87 WAR)

SP: Vic Willis (63.74 WAR)
SP: Addie Joss (44.24 WAR)
SP: Johnny Antonelli (31.8 WAR)
SP: Hisashi Iwakuma (17.21 WAR)
SP: Woodie Fryman (17.14 WAR)
RP: Jack Wilson (11.13 WAR)

Owners: Tom Clancy, Tom Werner
Hitting coach: Charlie Lau
Umpires: Terry Cooney, Alfonso Marquez
Fun names: Kid McLaughlin, Trader Horne
Jared's dad: Jerry Goff
Not that one: Matt Williams (-0.19 WAR)
Won't you come home?: Bill Bailey

These questions came to me in another thread. Is there a place to see how much the increased use of relief pitchers have contributed to decreases in run production? I think it would be simple to do generally by weighing IPs and ERAs, but how about RPs coming in the middle of an inning? I guess that second part is how much is the decline in run production a result of correctly using RPs in high leverage (for run scoring) situations. Is the number of runs scored less than expected based on measures like OBP and SLG?

I thought that poison ivy didn't grow in California.

Baseball franchise owner George Steinbrenner would have been exactly as old as Connie Mack was the day of his last game as manager (32,059 days).

If you like stuff like that, you can look up as-old-as items for your own life here, at ExactlyAsOld.com.

Or, if you'd rather, you can download an app from ExactlyAsOld and have your matches sent directly to you.

There really isn't much about Wolfgang, but he seems like an interesting guy. According to Major League Baseball Players of 1916: A Biographical Dictionary, he supported his family for 20+ years as a professional gambler.

Poison ivy. Yeah, surrrre...

I'll take "Euphemism" for $400, Alex.

Good point. That would explain why the illness is never specified, even after baseball historians meet with his family
