Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-24-2014

The lesser-known subplot of Wrigley Field’s first game, in the Toledo News-Bee, April 24, 1914:

Court Officers Yank Pitcher Johnson, Late of Reds, From Chicago Federal League Game

Chief Johnson, Indian twirler who jumped from the Cincinnati Reds to the Kansas City Federals, expressed confidence on Friday that the court order restraining him from playing with the Packers will be dismissed…
...
Papers were served on Johnson after he had pitched two innings at the Chifed opener. At the same time President Madison of the Kansas City club was enjoined from tampering with Cincinnati players now at the Cub park.

Not really terribly well done by the KC Feds, allowing someone to get close enough to Johnson during a game to serve him a court order.

Anyway, Johnson was in legal limbo for months and didn’t play again until July 25, when he threw a complete game for the Packers. When the Federal League died after the 1915 season, so did the Chief’s major league career.

Shouldn’t really be much of a surprise that a decent but unspectacular pitcher who fought organized baseball in court didn’t have much of a career afterwards.

"I just hate it when my Johnson gets yanked," Madison said. "Especially my Chief Johnson."

When I was looking at HBP leaderboards earlier this week, Howard Ehmke's name came up a lot. He was a sidearm pitcher with a weird motion even for a sidearmer, evidently, maybe like a less aggressive version of Carl Mays. It's possible he didn't throw at batters so much as catch them by surprise.

Frank Lucchesi has been active in the baseball community in DFW for a long time. I've see him at the Ballpark sometimes; he is a gentleman and it was great to meet and talk with him. He's 87 today and I hope he's well and has many happy returns.

Meanwhile the Rangers wake up in first place in the American League with a 14-8 record after a three-game sweep in Oakland.

The Rangers' "Pythag" is 11-11, so it's anybody's guess how "good" they actually are or project to be, but of course I'll take 14-8 in real life for now, gladly. They've alternated great pitching performances with ghastly ones, and they've managed to win 8 of their last nine by concentrating the ghastly into a single 16-2 loss and increasing the number of great. But they're about league average in both runs and runs allowed all told, as the 11-11 Pythag would suggest.

The Twins claim Kenny Wilson off waivers. The Blue Jays DFA'd him to make room for Darin Mastroianni, who had been DFA'd by the Twins. The Twins originally acquired Mastroianni by claiming him off waivers from the Blue Jays.

The Game of April 23, 1984 makes for an easy hook: Two Hall of Fame pitchers facing off for the first and last time. (Given that both pitchers were pretty old at this point, it was the Hall of Fame hitters on each team that actually came out ahead in the matchup.)

Yesterday's best game was the third-best of the year, which makes sense - many runs at important times (four ties or lead changes in a two late-inning span), the two starting pitchers combining to go 3/5, and a hero who entered the game with a .200 slugging average.
