Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-4-2018

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, April 4, 1918:

The hospital list in the Phils’ camp was increased yesterday afternoon when Mike Prendergast, the flinger from Chicago, sprained his ankle in an effort to jump from the grand stand to the ground. Mike was in good jumping form and had lots of technique, but a slippery step caused by some loose ice cream caused him to make a mess of it.

Not quite as strange as Vince Coleman getting rolled up in the tarp machine or Kevin Mitchell hurting himself while eating a cupcake, but this is one of the weirder injuries I’ve heard of.

SP: Martin Perez (5.82 WAR)
SP: Willie Ramsdell (4.45 WAR)
SP: Carlos Reyes (3.83 WAR)

That's a really nice set of position players. Has to be close to the best, no?

The pitching on the other hand...

But is he a British guitarist/singer and close friend of George Harrison?

Charlie Blackmon has signed a six-year deal with the Rockies, including two player options, which I guess means he basically has an opt-out after the fourth year. No word on the dollar figure.

Blackmon's deal doesn't seem too bad. I wonder if this was influenced by the slow market this season?

2019 is his age 32 season:

2018: $12 million + $2 million signing bonus, which basically replaces the $14 million arbitration-avoiding deal Blackmon signed in January;

2019: $21 million;

2020: $21 million;

2021: $21 million;

2022: $21 million Player Option;

2023: $10 million Player Option, subject to various bonuses and escalators.

The max 2023 could reach via incentives is $18 million, such as this: "If Blackmon has between 400 and 575 Plate Appearances in 2022, his 2023 salary escalates an additional $5 million"

Link to Blackmon extension article.

But not if he has 576? That's bizarre.

It doesn't seem like too much money, but I think it's too many years. He turns 36 halfway through the 2022 season, and is not likely to be worth $21 million at that point.

Then again, he's shown a terrific track record of broad-based growth - his WAR has literally increased every year he's been in the majors. I've never been a huge fan, in part because he comes across as such a goofball, but at this point, I think he's shown that his attitude and work ethic are pretty exemplary.

Not a TV judge: Joe Brown (-1.23 WAR)

Also not Joe L. Brown, GM who built the 1960 and 1971 championship Pirates teams, or Joe E. Brown, comedian in multiple baseball movies and father of Joe L. Brown.
