Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-13-2014

Baseball notes from the New York Sun, May 13, 1914:

“There is a possibility,” we are informed, “that the games in the American League will be cut from nine to seven innings.” About as much as there is of the outs per inning being cut from three to two.
...
“I don’t specify the hour at which my players must go to bed,” says Branch Rickey, “but I do demand that they get up at 7:45 and get eight hours sleep.” we have been trying to figure this out, but if Rickey’s rule doesn’t require his athletes to be in bed by 11:45 o’clock he much have some fast sleepers.

That just sounds like Branch Rickey. Also, I’m shocked to learn that the anonymous team executive’s idea to shorten games has been ruminating for 100 years.

The Game of May 12, 1984 was a pitching matchup between a washed-up 30-year-old and a 39-year-old who was still going fairly strong. It was decided late, and largely due to a series of moves you'd virtually never see in 2014.

The Game of Yesterday saw one of the starters do something he hasn't done in a year and a half, and it was done before he ever took the mound. It also saw two large blown leads by the same team, mostly because their opponents got two-run homers from two different players with the same last name, which I'm guessing is fairly uncommon.
