Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-25-2018

Toledo News-Bee, May 25, 1918:

Joe Jackson announced [today] that he is done with professional baseball.

“It makes no difference when the war ends. I shall not attempt to go back to ball playing to make a living. I intend to make my home here and to follow the trade of ship building.”

Jackson is peeved over press criticism of his action in quitting the White Sox after being called for selective service. He said he applied to the shipbuilding plant [in Wilmington, Delaware] two months ago for a job, that Manager Rowland knew it, and that Rowland also knew he was to leave the team while it was in the east.

Well, Joe, stay tuned. Making a living in baseball may not be an option too much longer.

Today's birthday team also has capable representatives for its legislative and judicial branches.

So, if Jackson did retire, he ends his career with a .353 average and .420 OBP in 4445 plate appearances. He has two hits titles, two triples titles, one doubles title, one OBP title, one SLG title, a .400 season, and a ring, but his counting stats aren't too impressive. 48.8 WAR. Does he make the Hall of Fame?

I tend to think he does. Statistics weren't all that widely available in the pre-Macmillan years and the voting was even more reputation-based than it is now.

The impression I get from reading all these old newspapers is that for most of the 1910s, Jackson was thought of as maybe a half-step behind Cobb as the best hitter in the AL. Roughly in a class with Speaker and Collins, a legitimately great hitter.

That's pretty close to Lefty O'Doul's career, but with 800 more PA. O'Doul didn't have a .400 season (he did have a .398) but he had two batting titles. Riggs Stephenson is kind of close too. Or maybe Pep Youngs.

No position player has made the Hall with that few PA. Jackson would have been considered for the first few Hall classes and he may have kind of formed the standards for Hall of Famers.

Is there a question on Dihigo's birth date? He was on the birthday team 2 days ago.

He's so great, he gets to be on every team!

That's a good question - I didn't even notice. He wound up on a May 23 roster a few years ago somehow and I keep making the same mistake.

Dihigo was born as a pitcher on May 23 and as a position player on May 25.

Part of the reason he threatened retirement might've been to get away from Comiskey. If he sat out a year or two, maybe he could've come back with another club and added to his legend?
