Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-14-2019

Columbus Dispatch, June 14, 1919:

The Czecho-Slovakian mission [in Paris] has been studying sports and has caught the baseball fever. The members will carry home with them a number of baseball outfits and will seek to introduce the game in the new republic.

And that’s the origin of the term “Czech swing”.

A pretty good pitching staff on today's Birthday Team, but not much on offense. Buffinton spent some time as a center fielder and might be a better option than Turang, though there's really no right answer between the two. Newcombe would likely be the second-best outfielder on the roster if he had spent any time out there.

It's probably not a great sign for your team when you're trying to decide whether your #1 and #2 pitchers are better outfielders than your actual outfielders.

Opening day for a few short season leagues is today.

It's always weird to me how soon that is, relative to draft day. The CWS is still going on!

I didn't know about Watkins; thanks!

3B/Manager: George Myatt (6.2 WAR)

When I was young, George Myatt coached third for the Phils. My brain always hears his name as I read it as "George Myatt Coaching at Third".

Newcombe would likely be the second-best outfielder on the roster if he had spent any time out there.

Newcombe played 55 games in the outfield (and 27 at first base) for the Chunichi Dragons in the Japanese Central League in 1962. He hit .262/.316/.473 in 301 PA, with 12 HR and 23 doubles. That .473 SLP would have ranked third in the league, behind only Sadaharu Oh and Shigeo Nagashima, if he had had enough PA to qualify. It was very much a pitcher's league - the CL hit .231/.284/.335 that season, so Newcombe's line is far better than it might first appear.
