Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-16-2017

Harrisburg Telegraph, June 16, 1917:

Club owners in the Three-I League met [in Chicago] yesterday for the purpose of discussing the course to be pursued during the remainder of the baseball season. So far the season has been disastrous from a financial standpoint, due to the war and unfavorable weather, and some action must be taken at once to avoid further losses, according to President A.R. Tearney.
President Tearney has sent telegrams to thirteen minor league [sic] in various parts of the country, requesting them to discontinue their respective schedules after July 4.

I imagine the typical response would have been something like “You run your league, we’ll run ours.”

Dan, I think you are overrating the position players by calling them ho-hum. ;)

Bryce Harper is exactly as old as Chuck Yeager was the day he broke the sound barrier (9,009 days).

Anyone who wants to can look up as-old-as items like this for themselves here.

RF: Kevin Young (5.83 WAR)

Young was the Pirates first next big thing after the early 90s team started breaking up. It took five years, but he finally emerged as a pretty good first baseman 1997-99. They gave him $24 million for four years starting in 2000, and he managed an 84 OPS+ during the term of the contract.

That's exactly as old as Gen. Francisco Franco was the day the Spanish Civil War ended. He was now fully in charge..

Pretty much every one of these I get is some sort of dictator. I guess I missed me calling.

Wow, Ron LeFlore was a much better player than I would have guessed. I pictured him as one of those players whose only skill was stealing bases. But he was a career .288/.342/.392 hitter (104 OPS+ in that era l) who hit as many as 16 homers in a season.

And not one of the two who were Original Mets...

Wow, Ron LeFlore was a much better player than I would have guessed.

LeFlore basically had half a career, just nine seasons in MLB. He didn't get to the majors until he was 26 (due to, um, other commitments) and was done by 34. He had only six full seasons in the big leagues but got MVP votes in four of them. Had LeFlore started at 20 and played into his late 30s, he could've had a Chet Lemon HoVG career.
