Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-18-2018

Washington Times, June 18, 1918:

“Irish” Meusel, the Phils’ young outfielder, tried to follow Ty Cobb’s example [in Philadelphia] yesterday, when he leaped into the bleachers and took a violent swing at a jeering rooter. He was finally induced to let the insulter live.

It’s not clear whether Meusel cared if the guy had no feet.

Welcome back, Dan!

Thanks! I was on vacation last week and tried to remember to post dugouts, but missed a couple.

On a completely unrelated note, ICYMI, Brewers reliever Adrian Houser puked on the mound twice yesterday and stayed in the game to finish the inning.

Mike Trout reached base all five of his PAs yesterday. His line for his last six games:

.684/.750/1.368 for an OPS of 2.118

The Angels are 1-5 in those games. Trout has reached base in 21 of 28 PAs. Four of those were HR. So he's been on base 17 other times and, you know, is MIKE TROUT, yet has only scored four of those times. Now, admittedly, only one of those times was past first (a double), and he hasn't stolen any bases in that time period, but I still think the Angels 3-5 hitters aren't doing a great job with their RBI opportunities.

Speaking of guys getting on base, Paul Goldschmidt has a .438/.514/.891 slash line in June (and .385/.467/.802 in his last 28 days).

His May was .144/.252/.278, downright Chris Davis-esque. We'll have to see how he does the rest of the month, but it's shaping up to be a mind-boggling difference between 2 consecutive months.

30 years ago today, in one of the greatest moments in the history of the Montreal Expos franchise, the Dodgers signed Pedro Martinez to his first professional contract.

30 years ago today, in one of the greatest moments in the history of the Montreal Expos franchise, the Dodgers signed Pedro Martinez to his first professional contract.
Earlier in the same month, they also signed a teenaged Raul Mondesi and drafted Karros and Piazza. And then nothing else interesting happened with them for the rest of that year.

We'll have to see how he does the rest of the month, but it's shaping up to be a mind-boggling difference between 2 consecutive months.

Anthony Rizzo did something similar earlier this year:

In April - .149/.259/.189, with 15 Ks and 4 walks, 1 HR/9 RBI
In May - .303/.408/.576, 10 Ks and 18 walks, 7 HR/28 RBI

Seems like there were a few established stars who got off to terrible starts this year for some reason. Through his first 20 games, Joey Votto was hitting .243/.337/.257. Since then - .329/.460/.518.

I had a 0.00 ERA in the 1997 World Series and the Yankees traded me straight-up for Stanton! What more do you want?!?

Why would anyone ever click on this link??? I'd rather see a leaked iPhone video of a nude Madeleine Albright singing "Never Gonna Give You Up."

3B: Chris Coghlan (0.19 WAR)

Heh, if you had asked me, Chris Coghlan, lifetime 0.19 or 9.10 WAR? I would have gone with the 9.10. He brought versatility to a useful off-the-bench type bat, but I didn't realize he brought TEH SUCK in the field for every position he played.

There are two rookies of the year (Alomar and Coghlan) and a fifth place ROY finisher (Shuck) on today's team. Coghlan and Shuck were below replacement the rest of their careers.

Is that a record?

Rich Folkers used to do all his throwing up in the bullpen. The game has changed.

Alomar was below replacement in 2 of his 6 All Star seasons.

Coghlan had 3 seasons of between 1 and 2 WAR, and 3 seasons between -1 and -2.

That really is a terrible birthday team. They've got a hall of famer, but they couldn't even get a good one.

I'm a little skeptical of those numbers. -57 RField in only 2905 PAs is really. really, awful.

Baseball circa 2018:

"Skip, our reliever is repeatedly vomiting on the mound. I'm worried that he's seriously ill. Should we maybe take him to the hospital?"

"Nah, he's fine, leave him in there."

**

"Skip, our reliever is right-handed and the batter is left-handed."

"MY GOD, MAN!! GET HIM OUT OF THERE!!"

Coghlan was in fact really, really awful. I can't say whether he was -57 runs awful, but he was horrible in every way.

This is scarily accurate.
