Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-22-2018

Chicago Eagle, June 22, 1918:

George Burns of the Giants is still wondering what happened to him in the last game in St. Louis. He was on second, and after Fletcher’s foul had been caught George danced about a bit as if he contemplated trying for third. When he turned around to go to second he found Center Fielder J.C. Smith there just receiving the ball. Burns was out.

I totally understand not noticing the center fielder sneaking in behind you, but how do you not see someone throwing the ball to your base?

There is a strange fielding statistic, "Putouts as C". Catching a third strike counts as a putout, so this stat is largely a function of strikeouts. As such, 47 of the top 50 seasons are since 1993. 20 of the top 50 (and 7 of the top 10) are since 2014!

Trivia: The other 3 seasons in the top 50 are from the sixties. Including the #1 spot! Name the two catchers responsible for these three seasons.

Johnny Edwards?

Randy Hundley. I don't recall the Cubs having a huge strikeout staff, but he did catch 160 games one year.

MLB has banned signings from the Mexican League (for now) - a week and a half before the start of the international signing period. Mexico has made for a very interesting loophole for teams wanting to spend money but in the penalty for previously exceeding the pool - as only the money paid to the player counts against your pool and the team tends to take 3/4 of the money in these cases... The Cubs and Padres, in particular, have mined this source of talent in recent years...

I think the phrasing in the first quote is inaccurate, or perhaps the runner took his eye off the guy with the ball, looking toward third as he faked running that way.
