Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-26-2018

New York Evening World, June 26, 1918:

King George is learning to throw a baseball in preparation for his appearance at the game between American teams on July 4, when he will pitch out the first ball.

At the request of the King, Arlie Latham, a former big league player, who will umpire the Fourth of July game, sent the King a regulation baseball a few days ago. The next day Latham called at the Palace and gave the King a brief lesson as to how the baseball should be handled.

“Your Majesty, the Freshest Man on Earth is here. Shall I send him in?”

Today's Birthday Team has an impressive collection of position players, which is useful because the pitching staff consists of one good starter, a LOOGY, and not much else.

Grant Desme, who left the A's back in 2010 to become a priest, is back in Indy league ball and hitting a hosanna-tastic .375/.400/.563 for the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Man, what a great story it would be if Desme made it all the way to the big leagues. He's obviously got huge talent, as a former second rounder who has done nothing but mash everywhere he's ever played.

Three players named Elmer had June 26 birthdays, but the youngest of the three was born 100 years ago. We need more Elmers.

Appeared in Game 5!

CF: Willard Brown (-0.7 WAR, Negro Leagues Legend)

Any mention of Willard brown reminds me of a story Bill James recounted in the Historical Abstract, written in the Jeff heath commentary. Brown went to bat with a Heath bat that was discarded because it had a broken knob. Brown homered, the only one of his career, and the first by a black player in the AL, and when he got back to the dugout, Heath smashed it to pieces.

Elmer Dessens pitched professionally from 1993 to 2011. But one man can only do so much.

There are a handful of articles I'd like to see written but don't have time to do the legwork myself + I suspect that the amount of general interest in the topic is limited at best. Having said that:

One would be on the Orioles DSL team. Baltimore is notorious for all but ignoring the international market so it's not that surprising that their DSL team is disproportionately comprised of guys cut by other teams (which shows up in easily having the oldest roster in the circuit).

I have a Strat-O-Matic solitaire league that includes players from all eras of MLB and NPB. It pretty much features every player who has had a significant career, with the exception of people like Hal Chase, Mel Hall, Eddie Cicotte, Marty Bergen, Ugueth Urbina, Troy Neel, etc, who were disinvited for reasons other than their ability as a player. Heath is banned from the league for that incident.

Some sources say that Heath destroyed the bat because he was superstitious about other people using his bats and not because of racism or anything against Brown. I don't know about that. The bat was broken anyway, so he could have just let him have it.

He's not hitting quite that well now, he's cooled off some. Been to 2 Barnstormers games this year, including the opener. Since Lancaster had Joey Terdoslavich purchased by the Mets, he's likely to get more time in the middle of the lineup.

Is throwing baseball 60 feet so different from throwing any other ball 60 feet?
