Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-4-2019

Grand Forks Herald, June 4, 1919:

Cleveland and St. Louis broke even in a double header Tuesday, St. Louis winning the first game 14 to 6…and Cleveland taking the second, 8 to 5.
...
Doc Johnston, Cleveland first baseman, fouled out in the second game after having nine consecutive hits in nine times at bat

I don’t know what got into Johnston in 1919, but he hit .219/.278/.287 in 762 plate appearances between 1916-1918. Doc hit .297/.346/.390 between 1919-1921.

Elsewhere in the news 100 years ago today, the Memphis News Scimitar has one of the most racist stories I’ve ever seen - and that’s saying something. Apparently former Memphis Chicks manager Dolly Stark has a strong aversion to teaching Malaysians to play baseball.

If you like catchers playing out of position or guys playing harmonica on the team bus, you'll love today's Birthday Team. As Misirlou correctly mentioned last year, Kennedy and Wilkins wouldn't have put up anywhere near these kinds of WAR numbers if they hadn't been catchers, but there aren't a ton of 1B/OF options. You're in Doug Griffin territory if you don't want to play a catcher in the outfield.

We'll just hope that removing the physical toll of catching helps Wilkins and Kennedy at the plate.

C: Tony Pena (24.7 WAR)
1B: Rick Wilkins (14.0 WAR)
2B: Lee Magee (10.2 WAR)
3B/Harmonica: Phil Linz (2.1 WAR)
SS: Kurt Stillwell (3.1 WAR)
LF: Terry Kennedy (21.6 WAR)
CF/Punter: Darin Erstad (32.4 WAR)
RF: George Watkins (9.0 WAR)

SP: Aaron Nola (16.7 WAR)
SP: Bob Klinger (9.9 WAR)
SP: Art Mahaffey (7.3 WAR)
SP: Orville Jorgens (2.7 WAR)
SP: Larry Demery (2.4 WAR)
RP: J.C. Romero (7.8 WAR)
RP: Cla Meredith (2.9 WAR)

Manager: John McNamara
Broadcaster: Bill O'Donnell
Coach, in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame: Kichiro Shimaoka
Father of that one: Ross Grimsley
Fun names: Jorge Bonifacio, Trace Coquillette
Not that one: George Washington
Prospect Flameout: Steve Searcy (-2.1 WAR)
Umpire: Tony Venzon

Don't expect the manager to remove any of these catchers for defensive purposes, either.

Teaching high-class Chinese in Malaysia how to speak English and play baseball? Dream job!

On a practical level, one wonders how many high-class Chinese in Malaysia were clamoring to learn how to play baseball.

I actually have a buddy in China right now, teaching ESL.

What I wonder is why British colonialists chose baseball as something they wanted to spread.

My sister teaches ESL in China. She likes it there. She's been doing it for > 30 years, in Korea, Japan, UAE, Qatar, India and now China.

My son has taught ESL in Japan since 2003, and now that he's working at the college level, he's had work-related visits all over East and Southeast Asia. He loves the job, loves the culture, is reasonably fluent in Japanese (and his wife can guide him thru the obscure parts.)

A separate article on the page says Dolly Stark instead took a job managing a Sally League team that became known as the Augusta Dollies. According to his SABR bio, he later became the first Jewish umpire in the modern major leagues and then had some success designing women clothing. But mostly, his life was "one tragedy after another."

Gotta do something while you're waiting for all that laundry to be done.

My sister was often a featured speaker in the SE Asia TESOL conference and ran it one year. There's a chance she and your son know each other. I get the impression that it is a tight knit community.

The pitchers with the 5 lowest ERAs over the last 365 days (min 40 innings pitched):

Taylor Rogers: 2-1, 1.60 ERA in 73 innings (72 games). 91 Ks, 16 BBs.
Blake Treinen: 9-3, 1.64 ERA in 82 innings (69 games). 96 Ks, 28 BBs.
Hyun-Jin Ryu: 12-4, 1.65 ERA in 126 innings (20 games). 122 Ks, 10 BBs.
Scott Oberg: 10-1, 1.66 ERA in 70 innings (67 games). 68 Ks, 19 BBs.
Mike Soroka: 7-1, 1.71 ERA in 68 innings (11 games). 57 Ks, 18 BBs.

SP: Art Mahaffey (7.3 WAR)

Fun fact from Art Mahaffey's SABR Bio: Mahaffey picked off the first three major-league players to reach base against him.

I'm sure it's possible, though we're not naming names. I will say that our son lives and teaches in Nagoya (though with about 2.6 million other folks living there, that's not much help.)
