Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-12-2011

AP, July 12, 1979:

It began as a baseball game on a sticky summer night and erupted into a melee of 7,000 rampaging fans overcome by Thursday night fever.

...

It wasn’t bad pitching that incited the mob to storm the field between games.  It was disco.

Chicago was not a funky town that night.  Here’s BB-Ref’s “box score” from game two of the planned doubleheader.

100 years ago today, The Pittsburgh Press reported that Saginaw manager Malachi Kittredge had been suspended for using profane language on the field.

Unfortunately, it appears he didn't use the Malachi Crunch.

We haven't had an update of this in a while ... here's the former Expos players that are still active (played in 2011).

Brian Schneider (Expos 2000-2004)
Maicer Izturis (2004)
Jamey Carroll (2002-2004)
Juan Rivera (2004)
Endy Chavez (2002-2004)
Orlando Cabrera (1997-2004)
Jon Rauch (2004)
Luis Ayala (2003-2004)
Scott Downs (2000, 2003-2004)
Livan Hernandez (2003-2004)
Javier Vazquez (1998-2003)
Bartolo Colon (2002)
Carl Pavano (1998-2002)
Bruce Chen (2002)
Milton Bradley (2000-2001)
Guillermo Mota (1999-2001)
Miguel Batista (1998-2000)
Ted Lilly (1999)
Matt Stairs (1992-1993)

And those who were in the majors in 2010 but haven't played yet this year:

Nick Johnson (Expos 2004)
Ryan Church (2004)
Brendan Harris (2004)
Gary Majewski (2004)
Claudio Vargas (2003-2004)
Chad Cordero (2003-2004)
Fernando Tatis (2001-2003)
Scott Strickland (1999-2002)
Geoff Blum (1999-2001)
Mark Grudzielanek (1995-1997)

I have to say Jon Rauch is the favorite to be the Last Active Expo, if he can stop having these incidents of dislocating his manager's jaw while trying to murder the umpire. But Bruce Chen is starting to suggest he could pitch into his 40s in a Ron Villone sort of way.

The player leading the American League in singles at the ASB this season is not Ichiro Suzuki. He's someone with an odd streak going that was the focus of a convoluted scoreboard trivia note when I saw him play last week: he is one of only five ML outfielders to hit 40 or more doubles in four or more consecutive years. Can you name him, and the other four 40-double streakers?
   5. Justin T is expanding the aperture of awareness Posted: July 12, 2011 at 01:44 PM (#3875239)
I can but that's because I looked it up when someone (you, presumably) mentioned it, so I will keep my mouth shut.
   6. BDC Posted: July 12, 2011 at 01:52 PM (#3875248)
Yes, I mentioned the singles leader in some other thread recently, I think. Odd bit of trivia, altogether.

There are also four infielders who have had 4 or more straight seasons of 40 or more doubles, though the question I saw mentioned only the outfielders. No catchers have done it, as one might imagine. (Only two catchers have ever had two 40-double seasons at all.)
   7. Dag Nabbit has the talking pillow Posted: July 12, 2011 at 01:57 PM (#3875260)
Dick WIlliams career highlights, about the recently departed Hall of Fame manager. It covers the most interesting, memorable, and important games and events that happened in games he managed.

I did similar things for some recently departed players, but since Williams managed over 3,000 games this one ended up being a bit longer. It's organized by team, so you can just skim around fairly easily.

Also, one of the most famous games in baseball history occurred 20,000 days ago.

If he pitches into his 40s, he may put the record for most teams played for out of reach.

Needless to say, I hope it happens.

Speaker would be the obvious first guess.
And I'll refrain from the current guy, because like Justin, I looked it up when you mentioned it.
   9. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: July 12, 2011 at 02:03 PM (#3875270)
AL outfielder, eh? My guess is Bobby Abreu.
   10. BDC Posted: July 12, 2011 at 02:37 PM (#3875321)
Speaker is one of the five, having 40-double seasons from 1920-23.

Edit: And Abreu is not.

Edit: and it's actually major-league outfielders, though four of them did it in the AL and only one in the NL.

Edit: Trying to set a record for most consecutive edits in a single post.
   11. JJ1986 Posted: July 12, 2011 at 02:51 PM (#3875352)
Is Magglio one of them? I know he's not this year's guy.

Edit: The singles leader is probably Markakis.
   12. BDC Posted: July 12, 2011 at 02:59 PM (#3875362)
Singles leader is Markakis, yes. His doubles streak is current, though he's only got 11 as of the ASB so it's likely to end this year.

Magglio had three straight 2001-03 but did not prolong the streak.

I think Crispix was trying to figure out who the outfielder is who leads the AL in singles, not just one of the other four. Which, of course, JJ just answered.
   14. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2011 at 03:10 PM (#3875379)
I thought of Abreu, too. He's got another very impressive streak going: he's on track for his 14th consecutive season of playing at least 150 games. I'm not sure if that would be a record, but I do know it's a longer streak than Gehrig or Ripken or Rose ever managed.
   15. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: July 12, 2011 at 03:23 PM (#3875393)
Abreu appears to have had 10 consecutive 35-double seasons, going 35, 42, 48, 50, 35, 47, 37, 41, 40, 39. He's tied with Harry Heilmann for 27th all-time in doubles, with 542. If he plays two more years after this one he could join the 600-double club, which only has 14 members. (most recent man to join, Barry Bonds, who retired with 601 ...hanging on just to get to a milestone, I see)

"Active" leaders in doubles:
572 Ivan Rodriguez
547 Manny Ramirez
544 Todd Helton
542 Bobby Abreu
516 Chipper Jones
502 Johnny Damon
499 Scott Rolen
493 Alex Rodriguez
481 Derek Jeter
463 Miguel Tejada
459 Vladimir Guerrero
455 Orlando Cabrera

Shouldn't Vlad be on that list in #3?

It's a record. Guys like Aaron, Rose, Murray, Ripken, Palmeiro, and B.Robinson all had a sub-150 game season in the middle of their careers.
List of top 200 players with seasons >= 150 games.

The next closest active player is Ichiro Suzuki (working on his 10th consecutive season).

Edit: Rose had seasons of 148 games and 149 games (1967-68), otherwise his string would have gone for 16 seasons (1965-1980).

Yeah, I guess I forgot to include Vlad because I had already been to his BB-ref page recently, so the link to it from the 2003 Expos page was purple instead of blue, so I didn't notice that I hadn't included it before. He seems unlikely to be the last active Expo though.

What do you think, is it going to be Rauch?
   20. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 12, 2011 at 05:23 PM (#3875504)
Who has the most career relief appearances without a single save? Hint: The numbers is 260 appearances and the player is active.
   21. Justin T is expanding the aperture of awareness Posted: July 12, 2011 at 05:31 PM (#3875512)
Regarding the last Expo, I would put forth a case for Maicer Izturis. Still just 30 and the kind of guy who stands a decent chance of finding himself on a roster for a long time. I would have said Jamey Carroll for the same reason, but had no idea he is 37 already.
   22. Matthew E Posted: July 12, 2011 at 06:02 PM (#3875548)
Speaking of former Expos, Juan Rivera is on his way to the Dodgers for a PTBNL or cash. So it looks like they're picking themselves up off the floor.

Matt Stairs is up to 13 MLB teams (12 franchises). Chen's only at 10.
I'm pulling for Stairs to keep going on. Plus it would be cool if a player from BEFORE the Expos "Lost Season" is the last one going...

I don't know the answer, but Eric O'Flaherty is at 257.

I was thinking it was Cla Merideth, but the jerk went and got a save this year.

Matt Stairs is up to 13 MLB teams (12 franchises). Chen's only at 10.

When Matt Stairs was Bruce Chen's age, he'd only played for 6 clubs. Chen could really knock that total sky high, though he's going to need to kick this stability habit he's found in K.C.
   28. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 12, 2011 at 06:41 PM (#3875598)
O'Flaherty is second.

Cla Meredith is still pitching????

Who has the most career relief appearances without a single save? Hint: The numbers is 260 appearances and the player is active.

My guesses:
Rafael Perez - 299 appearances, 3 saves
Peter Moylan - 281 appearances, 3 saves
David Robertson - 172 appearances, 2 saves
Craig Breslow - 266 appearances, 6 saves
Joe Thatcher - 164 appearances, 0 saves
Justin Miller - 183 appearances, 0 saves
Pat Neshek - 155 appearances, 0 saves
That fat guy on the Twins - 159 appearances, 0 saves

He had TJ in March or so. Out for the year.

Mike Morgan, Matt Stairs, and Bruce Chen have played for a lot of teams.
Just doing a quick check, I see at least one of them have played for 23 of the 30 teams in the majors.
They have not, however, been on the same team at the same time.
(Stairs has faced Morgan and Chen as a batter, however.)

1) Name the 7 current teams for whom none of them have played even a single game in the majors.
2) Name the 1 team that all three of them have played for at some point.

When I looked it up, I was quite surprised.
He's finished almost 50 games in his career, and none of them are saves. Yet, he's a better than average pitcher (especially this year).
   33. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:05 PM (#3875638)
1) Indians, Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Reds, Marlins, Rockies?
2) I think this would be the Blue Jays.
   34. SoSH U at work Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:10 PM (#3875649)
1) Name the 7 current teams for whom none of them have played even a single game in the majors.

I'll dovetail from Crispix on Boston and Cincy, replacing them with Tampa and SF.

2) Name the 1 team that all three of them have played for at some point.

KC?
   35. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:16 PM (#3875654)
1. Angels, Yankees, White Sox, Indians, Rays, Marlins, Giants

2. I know Morgan never played for the Royals although the other two have. I would say the Rangers?
   36. Nasty Nate Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:29 PM (#3875666)
I saw Chen pitch for the Sox. Pedro was a late scratch if I remember correctly.
   37. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:33 PM (#3875667)
1.) Crispix got 4 correct in his guess. SoSH got 6 correct (after making his swaps from Crispix's guesses). AG#1F got 6 right. No one has all 7 yet, but they have been mentioned across all three guesses.

2.) Bruce Chen was signed by Toronto, but he never played a major league game for them. AG#1F is correct: Texas Rangers.
   38. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:39 PM (#3875676)
Shared teams
Morgan/Stairs: Rangers, Reds, Orioles, Cubs, A's
Morgan/Chen: Rangers, Reds, Orioles
Stairs/Chen: Rangers, Phillies, Red Sox, Royals, Expos
   39. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 12, 2011 at 07:51 PM (#3875681)
And the answer to the relief appearances, no saves question was Joe Smith. We were looking for Joe Smith.
   40. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 12, 2011 at 08:26 PM (#3875710)
The answer to 1) is:
Rays, Indians, White Sox, Angels, Marlins, Giants, Rockies
   41. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: July 12, 2011 at 08:33 PM (#3875714)
I thought Mike Morgan spent like five years with the Angels. Presumably this was due to confusing him with Mike Witt.
   42. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2011 at 11:56 PM (#3875876)
It's a record. Guys like Aaron, Rose, Murray, Ripken, Palmeiro, and B.Robinson all had a sub-150 game season in the middle of their careers.

Thanks for looking that up. For the record, Abreu is now tied with Willie Mays at 13 straight 150-game seasons. If Abreu appears in 62 of the Angels' remaining 70 games, he'll have the record all to himself.
   43. Karl from NY Posted: July 13, 2011 at 02:42 AM (#3876197)
Ripken and Palmeiro among many other players of course had any streak of 150-game seasons interrupted by the strike (or both strikes.)
