Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-27-2011

Deseret News, July 28, 1987:

The longest winning streak in professional baseball history is history at 29 games.  The Billings Mustangs…outlasted the [Salt Lake Trappers] 7-5 Monday night in Cobb Stadium before 4,219 fans.

...

The Trappers are now a remarkable 32-4 in the Pioneer League.

The Trappers actually had a losing record that year in games not played during the 29-game streak.  Other odd facts about the 1987 Salt Lake Trappers:  They pulled off the streak without the benefit of a Major League affiliate to provide players, and not a single player from that team made it to The Show.

much like the 1916 Giants, who had a 17 game winning streak and also a 27 game non-losing streak (26 wins and one tie), but finished in 3rd place at 86-66. So, outside of the streaks, they were 43-66.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the White Sox are trying to clean house. First trade, Teahen and EJAx to Toronto (?) for Jason Frasor. I don't see how that helps either team since Jackson is a free agent at the end of the year.

Toronto seems to have a policy of stockpiling draft picks - maybe they want the Type A/B status that comes with EJax and value that more over any prospects package they could get for Frasor. I don't know why they'd take Teahen though unless his contract was paid by the Sox.

I had a dream the A's acquired Adam Dunn and Javier Vazquez in separate trades, but both were refusing to report because they didn't want to play in an empty house - which is odd because Vazquez plays for the Marlins.

Also, I played a piano duet with President Obama with Condoleeza Rice adding vocals.

Dude, do not eat spicy foods right before bed. It unsettles the GI which distracts the mind and leads to bad jazz.

EDIT: OK, unfair assumption, I admit. Were you guys actually playing jazz? I'm standing by the unsettled GI remark, however.

Dude, avoid fried meats which angry up the blood.
If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.
Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.
Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society— the social ramble ain't restful.
Avoid running at all times.
And don't look back— something might be gaining on you.

Posted yesterday afternoon at THT Live (and thus a little out of date after last night), inspired by recent events it's the low points in Mariners history. Everything from Game 5 of the 2001 ALCS to the time they let Alfredo Griffin score from second on a bases loaded walk.

Jays acquire Ejax and Teahen and $1 mill for Frasor and Zach Stewart. Expected to deal Ejax to STL in package for Rasmus

Per Jayson Stark, the Stros turned down an offer of P Jarred Cosart, OF Jonathan Singleton and a pitching prospect from Philly for OF Hunter Pence. Ed Wade is delirious.

not a single player from that team made it to The Show.

Forget The Show; most of these guys didn't get past Class A ball.

See, the Trappers were an independent team, so they hired a bunch of overage players, guys in their early-to-mid 20s, in a league full of 19- and 20-year-olds. (Imagine having a high school team filled with college-age players.) Some of them later got a chance in the "real" minors, but most of them were too old to be genuine prospects. Only one Trapper, Adam Casillas, got as far as AAA. (Don't why Casillas never got a least a cup of coffee; he hit everywhere he went, albeit not with much power. He also seemed to be your typical 1B/OF type, and there's always plenty of guys like that around.)
