Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-12-2018

Toledo News-Bee, July 12, 1918:

Some of the shipyard ball players are playing so poorly that they may have to be sent back to the Athletics for more seasoning.

Zing!

Solid pitching staff on today's Birthday Team, but no hitting other than Fairly and Kendrick. The manager, Doug Allison, had a career record of 2-21 as a big league skipper.

As crict pointed out a year ago today in the dugout, Ron Fairly is the all-time home run leader at Stade Parc Jarry despite never hitting more than 17 homers in a season with the Expos.

C/Manager: Doug Allison (6.68 WAR)
1B: Ron Fairly (35.14 WAR)
2B: Howie Kendrick (30.41 WAR)
3B: Bill Coughlin (8.32 WAR)
SS: Al Glossop (-0.16 WAR)
LF: Nicky Delmonico (1.16 WAR)
CF: Johnny Wyrostek (12.17 WAR)
RF: Walt French (0.77 WAR)

SP: Lee Meadows (28.43 WAR)
SP: George Zettlein (27.45 WAR)
SP: Mario Soto (25.65 WAR)
SP: Jack Harshman (15.00 WAR)
SP: Harry Krause (8.95 WAR)
RP: Tom Gorzelanny (5.35 WAR)

Fun names: Scipio Spinks, Lep Long, Hod Fenner
Fun pitching motion: Kelly Wunsch
Not that one: Jack Warner

Paging BDC: Carlos Gonzalez had a 4 4 2 6 boxscore line last night. He hit into two force plays, driving in a run both times and scoring afterwards, then hit two homers.

Is that the first 4 4 2 6?

Ron Fairly - the first Blue Jay All-Star! And, according to BBref, he struck out in his only plate appearance. Par for the course for the '77 Jays.

It looks like Gonzalez had five ABs yesterday instead of four. It's the second 5 4 2 6 after Charlie Keller in this game in 1939.

The only 4 4 2 6 is Ray Knight in 1979.

Watching Mario Soto in the early to mid 80s, I was always amazed that anyone got a hit off of him. Awesome fastball / slider combo that missed bats and, unfortunately, missed the strikezone too.

He also represented the Expos in 1973. I believe he's the only player to play in the ASG representing both Canadian teams.

Chris Davis this season:

He can suck at home or away
he can suck in April or May
he can suck in June or July
he can suck vs ground or fly
he can suck at day or night
he can suck vs left or right
I do not think he can hit anymore
I do think he should be shown the door

So if he's got to play, his ideal situation would be to face a lefty "balanced" pitcher, at home, in a July day game with 2 outs and at least 1 on, with a lead vs. a bad team, hitting out of the 6-hole.

Got it. Perfect storm.

When he hits a line drive, Davis is hitting .611/.595/.750 this year. Somebody should tell him to hit more of those.

This Sunday, the O's play a day game at home against a bad team, facing Mike Minor who is a lefty. If he is batting 6th, rush to set up a Draft Kings account!

At least Mark Trumbo, recipient of the Orioles' other ill-advised contract to a slugger (albeit for half as much annual salary and half as many years), is back to hitting well.
