Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-3-2018

Lake County Times, July 3, 1918:

Owner Comiskey of the Chicago White Sox recently ordered Pitcher Williams and Catcher Lynn out of his ball park when he learned that they had decided to accept lucrative offers from the Steel league.

“There is no room on my ball club for players who wish to esxape the army draft by entering the employ of shipbuilding concerns and steel mills,” said the irate Commy the other day. “Players like Scott and Faber, who have enlisted in the army and navy, respectively, have my best wishes, and I’m pulling for them.

“The government ought to get after baseball slackers like Williams, Lynn, and Joe Jackson. They should be put into the army, where they rightfully belong!”

Um, Charlie, trust me on this one: Open warfare with Lefty Williams and Joe Jackson won’t end well. I know you don’t like it, but ixnay.

This is the best Birthday Team we've seen in quite a while. I will say, though, that having spent a bunch of time at the beach recently, Heinie Sand is not ideal.

I hope it doesn't affect Frank Tanana.

C: Buddy Rosar (9.91 WAR)
1B: Juan Rivera (9.22 WAR)
2B: Cesar Tovar (28.25 WAR)
3B: Coco Laboy (-0.93 WAR)
SS: Heinie Sand (0.24 WAR)
LF: Greg Vaughn (30.81 WAR)
CF: Moises Alou (39.87 WAR)
RF: Curt Walker (21.94 WAR)

SP: Frank Tanana (57.64 WAR)
SP: Nig Cuppy (40.45 WAR)
SP: Luke Hamlin (14.29 WAR)
SP: Art Fowler (10.83 WAR)
SP: Dickey Kerr (10.34 WAR)
RP: Tommy Hunter (8.42 WAR)

Cult hero: Warren Newson (2.61 WAR)
Fun names: Bunny Brief, Danny Heep
General Manager: Brian Cashman
Inventor of Batting Average: Henry Dobson

Piper Davis might be a better choice for 2B, moving Tovar to 3B, and Laboy out of the lineup

And the beauty of it is, you can literally play Tovar anywhere!

The government ought to get after baseball slackers like Williams, Lynn, and Joe Jackson

And Albert Belle!

Per SABR bio, Faber enlisted in May 1918, got assigned to Great Lakes Naval Base where he ran a rec program and pitched, came back for all of the 1919 season. According to the bio, he enlisted because, as an unmarried 29-year-old, he was almost certain to be drafted.

Jim Scott volunteered mid-1917 but was also not sent overseas. But it was the end of his MLB career. Per the bio, the Sox offered him a tryout for 1919 but he turned them down to pitch for the SF Seals, pitching fine in 1919. I'll let the bio take over:

Scott turned up the next spring with a full beard and a desire for an increase in salary. Seeking to create a publicity stunt, team owner Alfred Putnam promised Scott a $500 bonus--as long as he did not shave. Scott's whiskers soon became a major media issue, with newspaper editorialists urging him to shave to "set a better example for youth". The situation even led to a league vote to ban facial hair for PCL players. Scott finally shaved off his beard, and was glad to do so as it had caused an aggravating rash all season long.

He pitched 7 more years in the minors with good success, seems to have gotten involved with a religious cult, got out of that and into umpiring for a few seasons, then went back West and got into the movie business. Sounds like an odd life.

Hmmm ... an OF of Vaughn in LF and Moises in CF may cause some angst among any flyball pitchers on the staff.
