Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-6-2018

Toledo News-Bee, July 6, 1918:

TY COBB ARGUES THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLACE BASE HITS IN BASEBALL

...Cobb admits that it is impossible to place hits with any great agree of accuracy. “It might be,” the Peach admits, “if every ball delivered by the pitcher cut the plate at a certain pre-determined spot. In fact, when a batter gets one in his “groove” he is able to place it with pretty fair accuracy.

“But the wise pitcher is keeping the batter guessing—throwing him off his balance—keeping him from getting a toe hold…[Willie Keeler] was able to wait until the ball was almost upon him before poking at it. Many of Keeler’s hits were pokey little flies, just past the infield.

Yeah, well, Ichiro could have placed base hits if he wanted to.

I think Bill Donovan should be "Not that one".

Anyway, I agree with Ty Cobb. I remember when Matty Alou was on the Yankees and every once in a while he would hit a blooper over the shortstop's head. The announcers would rave about this "bat control", and I'd think, if he has such great bat control, how come he doesn't do that all the time?

Bob Horner's four-homer game was 32 years ago today. Which means it's closer chronologically to the Dodgers winning their only World Series in Brooklyn than it is to now.

Welp, I tried submitting something last night (a Cubs prospect got an 80 game suspension for PEDs).

This time it didn't show up.

I can see it in the queue. It just hasn't been put in the newsblog yet.

Yeah, well, Ichiro could have placed base hits if he wanted to.
Wait, I thought that's what he did. Because he didn't want to hit home runs.
