Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-15-2011

Toledo News-Bee, August 15, 1911:

Outfielder Ten Million of the Victoria Northwestern league team has been sold to the Cleveland club.  He will report at the end of the Northwestern league season.

I haven’t been able to find much information on Ten Million, but I’m pretty sure he’s ten times better than One Million.

Apparently Ten Million named his daughter Decillion Million.

Also 100 years ago, arguably the most racist baseball-related thing I've ever read in an old newspaper. It would have been the link of the day, but I couldn't bring myself to quote it.

Yeesh.

Also, one hundred years ago today in Brooklyn, my maternal grandmother was born. She died three days after turning 90 (the grief was still fresh on the morning of 9/11).

Brewer notes of interest:

Betancourt is hitting .369 since the All Star Break with an OPS of .939

Zack Greinke is 4-1 since the ASB with a 1.56 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 40 innings.

And the worst ERA on the team since the break is Marcum at 3.82.

New this-day-in-baseball-history piece up at THT Live based on the 20th anniversary of Don Mattingly's haircut-based benching.

It then lists a bunch of other items having their anniversary or "day-versary" occurring today, including: Kevin Slowey yanked for his own protection despite tossing a no-hitter, I-Rod playing second base, Andruw Jones big league debut, for the second time Charlie Hough tosses a 1-hitter and loses (and this time his time got 13 hits in the loss), Ozzie Smith with a nice game-ender, Doyle Alexander defeats everyone, Eddie Murray steals home (in the 12th inning!), Bud Harrelson's wonderful wedding day, Luciano tosses Weaver twice, Ernie Banks Day, all-brother outfield, Warren Spahn sure could hit, gamesmanship by Senators groundscrew, the worst baserunning play ever, and a guy stealing home twice in one game.

Meanwhile, through some unlikely alignment of the planets, the Rangers take a 4-game lead into a 4-game series in Anaheim this week. They throw All-Star Ogando at Garrett Richards, making his second ML start, tonight. Just when I thought the Angels couldn't be shaken, there's a bit of daylight – of course, I may wake up in despair on Friday morning when the clubs are tied ...

Today's the deadline for draft picks to sign ... there will be a * lot * of activity on that front.

On the Brewers minor league front Taylor Green has gone bonkers in the second half at Nashville hitting .402/.496/.692

Green is not regarded as much of a third baseman and isn't young as he will be 25 on November. I know the Brewers like Casey but Green USED to be a prospect before he lost time in 2009 and 2010. He's obviously found his offense.

No home park help either as Green is hitting .361/.457/.644 away from Nashville.

I was in St. Louis this weekend and went to the games Friday and Saturday. Just because it's fun to tweak the "Best Fans in Baseball!" claim, I will say that aside from the usual mass clapping at appropriate times, sentiment was pretty negative. "Walk a few more, dickwad!" was the sentiment after Gonzalez's 3-run bomb Saturday. And most every Pujols AB was accompanied by several derogatory comments about his actual value versus what they perceive him to be asking (which was only $10M per, oddly).

Justin

I am glad you broached the subject as I have experienced the same thing but figured I would be subjected to nasty responses given my Brewer affiliation.

Here are the sentiments I gleaned in my observations/interactions with Cards fans in St. Louis:

--Carpenter is now 'just a guy' and this makes them sad

--Albert is not worth a MEGA contract

--John Jay can't play centerfield every day

--Tony's act is old

Wow - didn't see this one coming - Tigers have acquired OF Delmon Young from the Twins of LHP Cole Nelson and a PTBNL.

Let me be the first (of many) to say, "Great trade! Who'd we get?"

Wow. What did Delmon do now? He hasn't been all that bad since coming back from his latest DL stint (286/352/429), although the power hasn't come back.

Here's a potential candidate for Jaffe's Randy Moss All-Stars.

I don't think so, given that Chris defined that as players who had "terrific" careers. Or at least pretty decent ones. Unless you think Delmon is getting killed unfairly on his defense--and I don't see any reason to share that view--he's giving back just about everything he brings to the table offensively every time he stands in left field.

I think Young will have a pretty good career by the time that all is said and done.

Fair enough. He's young, and he's certainly shown some potential. But someone is going to have to figure out a way to hide him on defense or he's never really going to rise above ordinary.

I think Delmon Young is out of baseball in five years.

I think he'll be a third outfielder for some time. Is that splitting the difference?
