Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-21-2019

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 21, 1919:

Joseph Wilhoit, outfielder of the [Wichita] Western League club, and who will go to the Boston Americans next month, [yesterday] ended his batting streak in which he set a new world record by hitting safely in 69 consecutive games. The former record of 45 consecutive games was made by Jack Ness of Oakland, Cal., in 1915.

Wilhoit, who formerly played with the Boston Nationals and the New York Giants in the 69 contests prior to [yesterday], was at bat 299 times and secured 151 hits. His percentage was .505. He obtained five home runs, eight triples, 23 doubles and 115 singles.

He hit .505 during a 69 game hitting streak? Nice.

Today's Birthday Team is pretty good, provided Upton can learn to battle third base to a draw.

Also, I'm aware that nobody really called Ledell Titcomb "Cannonball", but I'm going to spend a few minutes acting like I never heard that.

he lost 21 games in 1952 with an ERA+ of 111 and lost 20 in 1954 with 107. Those early 50s Pirates team were wretched

Somehow Dickson got (extremely mild) MVP support in '52 despite leading the majors with 21 losses. He was a good pitcher who had a decent season, but that's crazy. I'd love to know the story behind that - maybe someone felt bad for him.

Led the league in losses three straight years. I remember looking at him a year ago.

Is Sean Foreman on vacation? BB-Ref hasn't even updated the photos on the home page in about 3 hours and they still don't have yesterday's games up.

Fixed now.

With the Pirates in a wretched stretch since the break, I poked around to see which Pirate teams had been worse over 30 games. Dickson's 1950 team bottomed out at 5-24 with a tie, the 1951 team managed 7-23, and 1952 team scraped along at 4-26. Dickson was winless during the 1950 slump, won three games during the 1951 slump, and won once during the 1952 slump.

The 1890 team, gutted by the Players League, went 23-113. They started the season 8-10, managed 2 three-game win streaks in June and July, but otherwise were always in a death march.

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

The use of gas-station sexual-enhancement pills in baseball is so prevalent that MLB sent out a memo warning players that their use could lead to positive PED tests, as at least two players have claimed this year, sources tell ESPN.

Wilhoit hit .422 that year. Using the stats quoted above, he hit 'only' .313 outside of his streak.

His SABR bio has slightly different (and more reliable stats): According to statistics compiled by Mike Kiser, Clearwater, Kan., and cross-checked by Bill Deane, Joe had 153 hits in 297 times at bat. His hits included four home runs, nine triples and 24 doubles.

That would make it .515 during the streak and .301 outside of it. He was a .327 career hitter in the PCL. Not sure what he was doing in an inferior league.
