Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-28-2018

Toledo News-Bee, August 28, 1918:

Clark Griffith says he shipped to Palestine baseball equipment sufficient for four teams, on request of Americans of Jewish ancestry and others who are in service with the British forces in the Holy Land. Several hundred American Jews, specially enlisted, have joined the army in Palestine and they no sooner got there than the desire to play ball overcame them. Think of it, baseball in Jerusalem, and real American slang heard in the city streets.

There wasn’t a team in Jerusalem, but Israel had its own pro baseball league about a decade ago. That would have blown the minds of 1918 people.

A solid Birthday Team with a strong name game. August 28 has Braggo, Jolly Cholly, Dode, Louisiana Lightning, Goody, and Buck Hooker. On days that Yeager pitches, Joel Youngblood takes over at second base and Aaron Ward slides over to shortstop.

C: Johnny Pramesa (0.46 WAR)
1B/Co-Manager: Charlie Grimm (13.4 WAR)
2B: Aaron Ward (13.5 WAR)
3B: Braggo Roth (16.75 WAR)
SS/SP: Joe Yeager (14.62 WAR)
LF: Tony Gonzalez (27.04 WAR)
CF: Dode Paskert (24.75 WAR)
RF/Co-Manager: Lou Piniella (12.47 WAR)

SP: Ron Guidry (48.14 WAR)
SP: Mike Torrez (23.18 WAR)
SP: Randy Wells (7.51 WAR)
SP: Tommy Hanson (4.83 WAR)
RP: Ryan Madson (13.89 WAR)
RP: Will Harris (5.06 WAR)

Owner: Tinti Molina
Fun names: Goody Rosen, George Bone, Buck Hooker, Kit Pellow
Have hit, will travel, will have another hit: Joel Youngblood (10.6 WAR)
Negro Leagues pitcher, probably should be in the rotation: Dick Whitworth
Outfield defensive replacement: Darren Lewis (10.51 WAR)
Spare bat: Carlos Quentin (10.43 WAR)
Umpires: Don Denkinger, Garnet Bush
Writer: Bob Fowler

as someone mentioned the other day, I'm surprised how little WAR Sweet Lou ended up with--and I'm equally surprised that Torrez is so high

If someone were to give me that list of position players and ask me to (off the top of my head) rank them by career WAR, I'd probably have Paskert-Roth-Piniella as my top three. I had no idea Gonzalez was that good.

I thought Carlos Quentin had a better career than just fifth outfielder on his own birthday team. Looking at his career record, though, he looks like the new Ron Kittle: Had a breakout year with the Sox at age 25 (CQ went .288/36/100, while Kittle went .254/35/100), but those turned out to be career highs in all three categories, and each spent several years as a minor slugger trying to recapture their former glory. Kittle finished with career numbers of .239/176/460, while Quentin finished with .252/154/491.

That's a 1978, one-game playoff heavy birthday team. The two starting pitchers and the rightfielder who lucked into keeping the game tied.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since Quentin's big season. He looked like the real deal, then fell off a cliff overnight. I remember thinking that the Padres had made a shrewd moving picking him from the Sox for such a small return, and wishing the Cubs had done it (he was 28, coming off a 2.5 WAR season, and still theoretically could have recovered to his former glory). Instead he bottomed out after the Padres gave him a fat extension.

Injuries, I guess. He never played more than 131 games in a season, and got to more than 100 only 3 times.

I'd have never guessed that Darren Lewis ended up with more WAR than Quentin.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

60 players in baseball history have 100 home runs for at least two franchises. Can you name any of them?

5 have 200 homers for multiple franchises. Extra points for naming them.
5 have 100 homers for a 3rd franchises. Extra points for naming them. (But no extra points for naming the guy with 99 homers with a third franchise)

Partial credit if you name any of the 3 guys with 100+ homers with one franchise .... but just 99 with a 2nd franchise.

Any guesses?

Magglio Ordonez? DING! CWS/DET. #47. 6/24/10
Derrek Lee? DING! CHC/FLA. #40. 8/20/07

If you want to clear out Chicago, one more Cub to name (the most recent guy to do it). And one more White Sox to name.

Werth? Nope

Soriano? DING! He's the Cub I hinted at just above. #54: 8/7/13 join. CHC/NYY> (Didn't get there until he returned to NYY).
Dick Allen? Nope
Vern Stephens. DING! NICELY DONE. I thought he'd be last man standing. #4 in the club. 5/6/51. One of 2 middle infielders to join in the early 1950s. STB/BOX

Sexson? DING! #42. MIL/SEA. 5/1/08
Armas? DING! 9/11/85. OAK/BOX. Only four guys on the list have fewer homers - one is Vern Stephens. Another is an active player not yet mentioned.

DeCinces had 237 career homers.

I'm kind of amazed he managed to limp across the finish line with Baltimore.

Two left:

21. SFG/LAA. 7/17/94. Not surprised he's one of the last ones left. He's as overlookable a player as can be while playing 19 years, having nearly 10,000 PA (9,997), having a career OPS+ of 121, 2 ASG selections, and having one of the most memorable first names over the last 30 years. (OK, his actual name is Charles - but no baseball card ever called him that). Now he's hitting coach for the Cubs

34. SDP/ATL. 6/23/03. I dunno how else to describe this guy. He played first base & left field. He did better with his 30s with the Padres than he did in his 20s with Atlanta. He was in San Diego around the time Phil Nevin was. 278 career homers. Only 8 guys on the list had fewer. 3rd place in the 1994 NL ROY voting. All-Star in 2001 w/ San Diego.
   72. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: August 28, 2018 at 01:14 PM (#5734896)
Klesko? DING!

Just one guy left. I like that he's the last guy left. Tony Phillips probably makes jokes about how overlooked this guy is.

Joey Bats is officially a Phillie. Not sure what they plan to do with him - maybe a bench bat? Seems like they have better players than Bautista at first, third, left, and right.

Can he play shortstop?
