Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-29-2010

Six years ago today, the Expos announced their move to DC.

When Bud Selig dies I am going to go to his grave and dig up some worms. I am going to take those worms and go fishing. I am going to take the fish I catch and feed it to my cat. I am going to take the litter out of my cat’s litter box and take it to the dump. Then I am going to check back at the dump in two weeks and look where I dumped the cat litter so I can say that I watched maggots engage in cannibalism.

Best Regards
John

Breaks my heart that John never got to do that.

Hunky Shaw was born on September 29, 1884 in Yakima, Washington.

Hunkey Hines was born on September 29, 1867 in Elgin, Illinois.

No one else named Hunky or Hunkey, or even Hunkee or Hunkie or Hun-Qui has ever made the big leagues.

Bud Selig has been dead for almost ten years, that thing they trot out for public appearances is actually a Muppet. You've never seen the Bud Muppet and Frank Oz together in public now, have you?

More walking trivia:

Yesterday it was revealed that Eddie Stanky holds the record for walks in a season without a home run: 137.

Since 1893, nine other players have drawn 100 or more walks in a season in which they hit no home runs. (It's actually been done 14 times by the ten different players.)

Who are Stanky's nine punchless walking colleagues?

Guesses off the top of my head: Max Bishop, Ferris Fain, Yank Robinson.

edit to add: Topsy Hartsel, Roy Thomas.

Fifty six years ago today, Willie Mays caught a ball and Dusty Rhodes hit a 254 foot home run.

Appling, Bishop (twice), Collins, Hartsel, and Thomas (four times!) are correct. That leaves four to be guessed.

Donnie Bush led the league in walks a lot back in the deadball era. I'll say him.
   13. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: September 29, 2010 at 02:48 PM (#3651116)
Ty Cobb, Richie Ashburn, Pee Wee Reese, Luis Castillo
   14. Hack Wilson Posted: September 29, 2010 at 02:50 PM (#3651118)
Ashburn hit a total of 3 homers in 5 seasons and then in his last year hit his seaon high number of homers. I'm pretty sure he started juicing.

John McGraw?
   16. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: September 29, 2010 at 03:05 PM (#3651147)
Ashburn, Bush, and McGraw are correct. That makes nine including Stanky; one is still unidentified. He's a Hall of Famer ...

Billy Hamilton?
   18. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: September 29, 2010 at 03:19 PM (#3651169)
Not Hamilton, though he had a 100-walk season in 1900 with only one home run.

Speaker? Hughie Jennings? Johnny Evers?

Umm -- Miller Huggins???

Nellie Fox? One of Tinker-Evers-Chance? One of the Babe Herman/Billy Herman/Buddy Myer trio of similarly named players whom I can never keep straight in my head?
   23. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: September 29, 2010 at 03:35 PM (#3651196)
Bill Mazeroski? Phil Rizzuto? Luis Aparicio?
   24. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: September 29, 2010 at 03:41 PM (#3651203)
Johnny Evers had 108 walks with no home runs for the 1910 Cubs. Randy Jones is today's winner, what do we have for Randy, Johnny? Nothing? What the heck kind of quiz show is this.
   25. Randy Jones Posted: September 29, 2010 at 03:48 PM (#3651214)
Coincidentally, looking up Evers on BB-Ref, I just discovered that he was a Troylet and is apparently buried about 1000ft from where I lived when I went to RPI.
