Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-10-2019

Toledo News-Bee, September 10, 1919:

Rev. Frederick N. McMillin, Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church, asked all loyal fans on Tuesday to join him in prayer for a pennant for the Reds.

To that end he has written prayer in which the Lord is asked to grant “speed, control and deceptive curves” to the pitchers; frequent and timely hits to the batters; blessings to Pat Moran, manager and good health and safety from accident to tall the players.

Rev. McMillin was the third baseman on the University of Wooster team in 1894, and still occasionally practices with the Reds.

That’s not now this works. That’s not how any of this works.

This is a pretty good Birthday Team, but it would be a lot better if Torey Lovullo would let Goldschmidt play some right field. I'm not excited about Big Klu being on the bench, but neither he nor Goldy ever played anything other than first base. Votto is also a first baseman, obviously, but he's at least made a few cameos in left field.

C: Jack Lapp (8.9 WAR)
1B: Paul Goldschmidt (42.8 WAR)
2B: High Pockets Kelly (25.6 WAR)
3B: Neil Walker (21.1 WAR)
SS: Harry Niles (5.8 WAR)
LF: Joey Votto (60.4 WAR)
CF: Roger Maris (38.2 WAR)
RF: Dusty Miller (7.8 WAR)

SP: Randy Johnson (101.1 WAR)
SP: Barney Pelty (20.9 WAR)
SP: Anthony Swarzak (5.5 WAR)
SP: Chad Kuhl (2.3 WAR)
SP: Preston Hanna (1.8 WAR)
RP: Danys Baez (5.8 WAR)

Manager: Eddie Sawyer
Backup 1B/Bench Bat/Uniform Designer: Ted Kluszewski (32.4 WAR)
Not that one: Harry Anderson
None of those ones: Danny Murphy
-3.6 WAR in less than 500 career AB: Chad Hermansen

Not that it means anything, really, but I just discovered that BBREF now has coaching staffs listed for each team each season.

It's pretty hilarious and cool.

I met Harry Anderson long ago. He lived, not far from the town where I grew up.

I bet there aren't a lot of birthday teams where four non-Hall of Famers have more WAR than the lone Hall of Famer on the team.

yeah, I was just about to say High Pockets Kelly is only the 4th best first baseman on this squad, and may still end up being the only one in the HOF.

Plus, I think there are 2 HOFers on this team... :-)

For a second I was wondering if steroids or something had kept Randy Johnson out of the Hall.

Low ceilings.

“speed, control and deceptive curves”

She was a lot of fun.
