Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-11-2017

Butte Daily Post, September 11, 1917:

BRITISH FIND NOT A LITTLE AMUSEMENT IN AMERICAN GAME

To the average American fan his reading accounts of the game in British papers will be truly interesting. In brief, one of the London contemporaries has termed the sport “Merry Hulla-Ballo.” Thus far the foreign critics have not fully grasped the common expression of “That’s the boy.”
...
While Stanley, the Canadian twirler, was displaying an effective delivery, the fans complained that he was throwing too fast to follow the ball. The Britishers spoke of the extra-base clouts as being very “big” hitting and they were particularly interested in the gloves worn by the players.

Foul balls must have blown their minds.

I hear you, Ralph. I don’t control that. They’re expanding all the time, but also being selective on which markets they go into.

Rick Porcello has 17 losses, and will get a few more starts. The Sox are in first place. Has anyone recently had 17 for a 1st-place team? or even 15?

Ellis Burks is from Tarrant County, Texas, and was a popular visiting player in Arlington. I remember a couple of years after he left the Red Sox, some guy was in the bleachers here ragging on a Sox outfielder, it may have been Troy O'Leary. "O'Leary, you stink," or whatever, and then he added: "Remember when you guys had Ellis Burks? At least you had some class back then!"

I think Tim Lincecum was the last pitcher to lose 15 for a division champion (2012 Giants), but I am not entirely certain of that – just a quick look at B-Ref.

Just eyeballing it I find four guys with 15+ losses for a division winner this century;

2012 Lincecum - SFG - 15
2008 Vazquez - CWS - 16
2006 Silva - MIN - 15
2005 Lawrence - SDP - 15

I suggest Mr. Brodie stay away from Brooklyn...

Thanks. That's more than I expected. I also found Jason Marquis with 16 on the aught-six Cardinals.

I probably missed somebody, but the most recent 17-game loser I found for a first place team was Dennis Leonard for the 1978 Royals. He went 21-17 that year.

If Porcello loses another one and the Red Sox hang on to the division, I think he would be the first 18-game loser since Larry French went 10-19 for the 1938 Cubs.

And then, I think the last pitcher to lose twenty for a first-place team was George Mullin for the 1907 Tigers. He went 20-20. The Tigers went 72-38 behind other pitchers.

Eduardo managed all of 1 career WAR, but there's a fair chance that he made more money than he dad. (B-Ref doesn't have salaries for all of Tony's career.) Baseball inflation is crazy.

Since there was no birthday list yesterday, and it was Joey Votto's birthday, I was looking at the list of those who share his special day (and really, the anniversary of his birth is a special day for all of us).

There are 78 players in MLB history who (1) accumulated >= 25.2 bWAR and (2) played >= 50% of games at 1B. Four (High Pockets Kelly, Ted Kluszewski, Paul Goldschmidt, and Votto) share 9/10 as a birthday.

He's going about it all wrong if he wants to be Kong. I mean, Judge is nice to people.
