Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-19-2017

Harrisburg Telegraph, September 19, 1917:

Ping Bodie, of the Athletics, is an enthusiastic collector of baseball articles which have helped make history for the national game.

When the Athletics played in Detroit recently the Tigers made a triple play. When First Baseman Burns tossed the ball on the diamond after the three-ply killing Umpire Nallin obtained it.

“This should make quite a souvenir for you, Ping,” said Nallin, as he handed the ball to the big Italian.

“You betcha,” said Ping.

Seems like Ping Bodie was a cool guy. He was the butt of a bunch of jokes when he was a ballplayer, but every time I read anything about him personally, he sounds like a lot of fun.

Wow, good team. Cheap shot at Nick Johnson though, not his fault he was made of glass.

As bad as Morgan was I actually preferred him to McCarver.

Resuming my list of records for various box-score lines with 2-for-3 days, no RBIs. Only one seems trivia-worthy:

3 0 2 0 : done 35 times by Bob Boone, who appears on a lot of these leaderboards

3 1 2 0 : done 37 times by Rickey Henderson and Wade Boggs

3 2 2 0 : Henderson, 22 times

3 3 2 0 : Pete Rose did this seven times

3 4 2 0 : done twice apiece by two guys who were regulars on World Champion teams for Cincinnati, decades apart. Both were All-Stars; one is a Hall of Famer. Any guesses?

3 5 2 0 : five guys have done this once, including George Stirnweiss and Eddie Yost

Morgan and Votto?
   5. BDC Posted: September 19, 2017 at 11:26 AM (#5534341)
Morgan, no; and neither of the two 3420s was a teammate of Morgan's.

Votto, no – he hasn't been on a World Champion :)

Werber and Larkin?

I own two bobbleheads, one of which is a Nick Johnson. I always liked him and thought he was a heckuva player, but he was broken as often as not.
   8. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 19, 2017 at 11:51 AM (#5534368)
I own two bobbleheads, one of which is a Nick Johnson.

In a glass case, I assume?

Frank McCormack and Joe Morgan?
   10. Pat Rapper's Delight (as quoted on MLB Network) Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:03 PM (#5534383)
Vada Pinson and Barry Larkin?
   11. BDC Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:04 PM (#5534384)
Larkin is one guy to go 3420 twice, and the other is one of Billy Werber's 1940 teammates, though not Frank McCormick.

Duke Snider had 3 seasons of 8.4+ bWAR, yet never won an MVP. Has anyone else done that?

lombardi?
   14. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:34 PM (#5534408)
Roger Angell is 97 years old today.
   15. BDC Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:39 PM (#5534413)
Not Lombardi. Not Lonnie Frey or Eddie Joost either. Not an easy guy to guess, though as I say, he was an All-Star.
   16. Rennie's Tenet Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:53 PM (#5534419)
Ival Goodman?
   17. BDC Posted: September 19, 2017 at 12:57 PM (#5534421)
Ival Goodman, exactly.

he sounds like a lot of fun.

Ping on the Yankee's acquisition of Ruth (who was also considered a LF): "I suppose this means I'll be sent to China."
