Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-22-2017

Updates on international baseball in the Chicago Eagle, September 22, 1917:

The American boys in France are finding out that they are not the only men who can play ball. Not counting the Canadians, or “Americans,” there are in the Australian part of the British empire’s army a lot of very nifty baseballers.

The Japanese government, it is reported, plans to send two college [baseball] teams in a tour of its territory in Manchuria, partly to make the Japanese colonists there feel in touch with the home land, and further to get the natives interested, so that they will have less time to grumble about Japanese governmental policies.

If I’m a Manchurian in 1917, I’m going to make an effort to figure out what the Japanese are doing, then do the exact opposite. I wonder if resentment towards Japan had anything to do with baseball’s failure to take hold in China.

My thought process as I scanned the career WAR leaderboard for today's Birthday Team, looking for a manager: "Cool, Bob Lemon. That makes it easy. Wait, is Larry Dierker a better choice? Bill Joyce had a better record than either Lemon or Dierker, should I pick him? Matheny won three consecutive division titles and a pennant. Probably Matheny.

Oh. Lasorda."

C: Bob Geren (1.18 WAR)
1B: Jeffrey Leonard (9.74 WAR)
2B: Alexei Ramirez (21.84 WAR)
3B: Bill Joyce (30.96 WAR)
SS: Carlos Correa (15.0 WAR)
LF: Vince Coleman (12.23 WAR)
CF: Ira Flagstead (18.16 WAR)
RF: Austin McHenry (9.96 WAR)

SP: Urban Shocker (58.74 WAR)
SP: Bob Lemon (48.75 WAR)
SP: Hooks Dauss (39.23 WAR)
SP: Larry Dierker (31.92 WAR)
SP: Mark Guthrie (9.58 WAR)
RP: Hal Dues (1.5 WAR)

Manager: Tom Lasorda
Ballplayer or Sesame Street theme park?: Grover Land
Fun names: Charlton Jimerson, Stover McIlwain
Backup infielder: Wally Backman (13.12 WAR)

That's a pretty good rotation. I'm guessing that Carlos Correa's WAR will be higher when he is done.
   3. BDC Posted: September 22, 2017 at 10:29 AM (#5536686)
Interesting that you didn't even get to Geren and Backman. This club has more managers than players :)
   4. Batman Posted: September 22, 2017 at 10:50 AM (#5536708)
Lasorda is 630 dog years old, or 6300 dumber than ten dog years.

Today would be an excellent argument to resurrect the old College of Coaches. Lemon, Dierker, Matheny, and Lasorda would probably fare better than the motley crew the Cubs managed to assemble.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

Yesterday, Robinson Cano hit his 300th home run. That makes 12 people who have played in 2017 who are members of the 300 HR club. How many can you name?

(B-ref lists 13 active players in the 300 HR club, but one hasn't actually played this year).
   7. Pat Rapper's Delight (as quoted on MLB Network) Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:10 PM (#5536784)

Who are you to doubt El Tappe?
   8. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:18 PM (#5536791)
Pujols
Beltre
Cabrera
   9. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:19 PM (#5536793)
Adrian Gonzalez?
Carlos Beltran
Ryan Howard
   10. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:19 PM (#5536794)
Encarnacion, Joey Bats.
   11. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:21 PM (#5536798)
Ryan Braun
Nelson Cruz
   12. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:21 PM (#5536799)
Holliday.
   13. RJ in TO Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:22 PM (#5536800)
Curtis Granderson
Matt Holliday
   14. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:23 PM (#5536802)
And I assume Prince Fielder is the one listed as active but not playing?
   15. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:24 PM (#5536803)
Pujols? DING! #1, with 614 HR
Beltre? DING! #2 (tied) with 462 HR
Cabrera? DING! #2 (tied) with 462 HR
Adrian Gonzalez? DING! #10, with 310 HR
Carlos Beltran? DING! #4, with 435 HR

Ryan Howard? Nope. He hasn't played in 2017. He's the guy I note in my paranthetical comment at the end of post #6

Encarcion? DING! #5, with 347 homers
Joey Bats? DING! #6, with 330 HR

With Cano are listed as a given, that means 8 have been named -- and four still to name. They are at 319, 318, 313, and 302 homers respectively.
   16. villageidiom Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:25 PM (#5536804)
Robinson Cano (obviously, he's in the question!)
Albert Pujols
Ryan Braun
Adrian Beltre
Jose Bautista
Edwin Encarnacion
Miguel Cabrera
Adrian Gonzalez

EDIT: Dammit, I need to submit the names as I think of them, and not compile a list and submit at once.
   17. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:25 PM (#5536805)
Ryan Braun? DING! 302 homers, 11th place
Nelson Cruz? DING! 319 homers, 7th place
Matt Holliday? DING! 313 homers, 9th place

Prince Fielder has officially retired and is thus not on B-ref's list of active players.

The guy at 318 homers is the only one left to name, through post #15.
   18. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:27 PM (#5536808)
I thought Howard played a few games for the Braves this year? Or did I dream that in a summer heat coma?

Well, if you skip post #13, sure.
   21. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:29 PM (#5536813)
The last guy left has the most homers of any active left-handed hitter.
   22. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 22, 2017 at 12:31 PM (#5536816)
Oh, right - post #13 did mention him.

Curtis Granderson? DING! 318 homers.

That clears the field.

Howard played in AAA in both the Braves and Rockies organizations, but hasn't made the bigs. Or deserved to, since he hit .189/.208/.367.
   24. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:00 PM (#5536844)
Aha, OK. I knew I remembered hearing his name bandied about earlier this year. I thought he had come up to ATL for a few games after Freeman got hurt.
   25. stanmvp48 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:03 PM (#5536845)
Who can name the five players from the 2007 Rockies world series team who are still active. Counting being on disabled list.
   26. Dag Nabbit at ExactlyAsOld.com Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:05 PM (#5536848)
Matt Holliday
   27. stanmvp48 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:07 PM (#5536852)
Holliday is correct
   28. Nasty Nate Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:11 PM (#5536857)
Ubaldo and Tulo
   29. Nasty Nate Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:15 PM (#5536859)
Jeff Francis might be able to identify Dustin Pedroia, but he's not still active.
   30. JJ1986 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:39 PM (#5536888)
Seth Smith
   31. JJ1986 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:39 PM (#5536889)
and maybe Iannetta
   32. stanmvp48 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:44 PM (#5536898)
Correct. Tulo, holiday,Ubaldo,Ianetta, and Seth Smith. I didn't think anyone would get him
   33. JJ1986 Posted: September 22, 2017 at 01:58 PM (#5536918)
If I remember correctly, Smith had some kind of crazy September (I think he hit over .500) and got at least a key at-bat in Game 163.
   34. Batman Posted: September 22, 2017 at 02:10 PM (#5536933)
Seth Smith should have retired after 2007. He hit .625 in his 8 regular season at bats and then .500, .500, and .500 in the three rounds of the playoffs.

By the way, what's the deal with the new weird Mets-obsessed troll in a bunch of other threads?

Is Base back? He's got a strange Furtado obsession for an apparent newcomer?
