Prospects who stood out in Arizona Fall League

This is a surprising development for the Cubs.

Nico Hoerner, SS, Cubs’ No. 6
The Cubs’ 2018 first-rounder’s inexperience has been a non-factor in the AFL, where he’s hit .321 and looked like a player straight out of Double-A, and one possibly even on the cusp of the Majors. That’s not to say that Hoerner will springboard up the ladder in such fashion in 2019—but he certainly could. At the plate, he has a knack for barreling the ball to all fields, can handle velocity and adjust to secondaries, and he has more juice in his bat than you’d expect. His arm stroke is a little stiff at shortstop, but it plays up because he creatively finds ways to achieve a good slot, has sound footwork and consistently follows his throws with his body. He’s a very, very solid ballplayer.

I was out there for a few days. One scout said he doesn't see Hoerner handling a middle INF slot in the bigs.

Justin Lawrence is like a right handed version of Randy Johnson. Not looking forward to seeing him in late innings against the Diamondbacks.

Jazz Chisholm is an exciting dynamic player. Has all the tools. Generates a lot of power with lightening quick hands, despite his size. Runs like crazy and makes eye popping plays at short.

I like Duplantier a lot, and his curve and slider are big league ready. I've been to every one of his starts. He has been inconsistent with the fastball command, and he can be hit. But he's inducing a ton of groundballs and DP's to go with all the K's. Nice combo

Tyler Nevin is going to win the Fall League MVP.

Oh good, I was hoping sending Hoerner to AFL was a sign that somebody in the Cubs org thought he was on the cusp of taking a step up. We've done very good on the position player development side of things so I was hopeful. As to his position, the current short-term holes are at 2B (assuming Russell dumped) and OF so not being able to handle SS isn't an issue but obviously would be nice if he could be OK at 2B. And nobody would object if he were to become the next Zobrist. :-)
