Pujols, La Russa absent as Obama honors Cardinals

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday dubbed the St. Louis Cardinals the “greatest comeback team in the history of baseball” thanks to their thrilling late-season charge into the playoffs and death-defying, seven-game triumph in last November’s World Series.

[...]

Two key figures of the championship season were absent. Manager Tony La Russa retired after the series. And star Albert Pujols signed a $240 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason.

Classy!

FWIW, Pujols missed the '06 W.S. celebration at the Bush White House for a previously planned humanitarian mission in the D.R.

Two Glenn Beck fans don't want to meet Obama. Big Whoops.

@3: yeah, I'm having trouble seeing a problem here.

They aren't on the team anymore. I know when they did this with the Packers, players who leave as FAs don't go.

However, hypocrite Mark Chmura didn't go to see Clinton after Super Bowl 31 because he didn't like Clinton's morals. So there is that.

Why? Did Chmura have a problem with Lewinski's weight?

LaRussa is republican? Is there anything at all likeable about him?

Uhh, he's a lawyer?

Okay I'll try again later.

He's a big animal rights guy -- though that might be an offshoot of the misanthropy.

In possibly related news, the Secret Service detained a man passed out at the wheel of his vehicle at the WH gates...

Just looked at the pictures. Who's that White House staffer behind the First Lady?...wait, that's Jason Motte. Oops.

He thought she was too old. I mean she had already graduated high school!

Arthur Rhodes supposedly confirmed that he was going, and he's not on the team.

Pujols has been keeping away from the team since he signed, I don't think him not going has anything to do with politics. TLR? I don't know.
   15. robinred Posted: January 18, 2012 at 01:33 PM (#4039414)
I think there might be some minor sniping/backlash if Pujols went--not based on his politics, but based on his FA decision. I would guess Pujols wants to avoid that.

LaRussa is in his 60s. He may just not want to go, perhaps partly due to his politics.

Pujols didn't go because he couldn't pass the background check. /conspiracy

Pujols has already been to the White House before, to meet President Coolidge.

Isn't LaRussa a PETA supporter? That would mean he absolutely is not a "big animal rights" guy, but actually a loud-mouthed attention whore and/or a ####### moron.

He was also invited to the Wilson White House, but turned that one down based on Glenn Beck's recommendation.

Pujols didn't go because his background check would reveal his true age!

Edit: And I see GB had a far better joke.

He's actually kind of in the middle of those two positions. He and Marv Levy (who called hunters murderers)are the two animal lovers in coaching/managing that I'm aware of.

That actually happened to Delonte West of the Mavericks.
