[OT] Q4 NFL Thread

So as what not to annoy the people in the “no, no, the fact that we exploit our players and refuse to cut them in on the cash except for dirty booster money makes us amateur and pristine!” thread.

Mike Vick was injured in the posting of this thread.

Game probably shouldn't be this close. Belichicken settled for FGs twice in the first half instead of going for it. And then sat on the ball with 1:09 to go in the half, with two timeouts.

Cundiff gave himself no time to get ready for that kick, which is inexcusable.

They had a timeout in their pocket. No reason not to take it.

I guess that pic of Tebow Tebowing before Brady was pretty dead on.

Yeah I was surprised they didn't call time out. The play clock was running out.

New England finally beats a winning team after 18 games and kicker blows a chip shot!!! AFC CHAMPIONS!!!! Crown the Pats KINGS of the AFC!! Bring on the SUPER BOWL!! 1-2 vs winning teams!!!!

The hold looked a little funky, but, as Phil said, "good enough."

---

Did anyone notice on Torrey Smith's TD that he basically dragged the defender along by the facemask?
   2408. Ray (RDP) Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4042633)
Perhaps Cundiff didn't want to ice himself :-)

Not the best game for the Patriots. They got lucky to get out of there with a win, especially without having to go to OT to get it.

Bummer to lose like that, but at least now I'll have a rooting interest if the 49ers beat the Giants.
2410. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4042636)
I didn't think Smith's face ask was worth a penalty.

The hold was fine, it was that Cundiff ran out there too late, got to the spot then backed up and immediately kicked. Had no time to set himself. Footwork is important in every sport. Ravens should have taken timeout.

Dragging the defender by the face mask for 10 yards isn't a penalty?

I didn't see him dragging him. I guess I wasn't paying attention.
   2414. Flynn Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:25 PM (#4042642)
The laces were fine, Cundiff just overcompensated as much as anyone has ever overcompensated for kicking from the right hash
   2415. Every Inge Counts Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4042644)
I wonder how much was it that Cundiff and the Ravens were expecting the Patriots to use a timeout to "ice" the kicker. Definitely a rushed kick.

It went down earlier, sometime in the 4th, I think.

Yeah it went down mid-4th. By "finish" I didn't mean the final play.
   2418. Ray (RDP) Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4042651)
DA, if you can watch the Smith TD I'd be interested in your feedback, since you clearly know more about football than me (that's not snark; I'm being serious). Smith basically grabbed the defender's facemask and was just pulling him along for at least a few yards. If that's not a penalty... something is very wrong.

It was on all the replays, because they were looking at whether he got the ball in for a TD. But Nantz and Simms never commented on it. I guess it wasn't as important as the origin of Flacco's fu manchu.
2419. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: January 22, 2012 at 07:47 PM (#4042654)
Just watched it again. Yeah, like most people I was focused on his feet. I agree that should have been a penalty, he dragged the defender down with him. I may have been thinking of a different play.

Joe Buck: "Eli Manning is playing better than he ever has."

Manning then completely misses his receiver.

How was Vernon Davis so crappy for so long? He's really an amazing physical freak (and probably juicing, but I am actually a 49ers fan so I don't care).

At least twice Buck has said that Manning has had a pass tipped or slip out his hand when that's clearly not the case. The balls traveled straight and clean.

Yeah, the magic number for steps is 2 (enter the Monty Python bit). You could make a case that he didn't have control for all those steps, of course. The Calvin Johnson call just showed how ridiculous the NFL's attempts to define a catch are. I play a lot of ultimate frisbee, and although if given the choice I'd rather play a game of football, it is really nice that there is a clear, quantitative definition for a catch.

The SB I least wanted to see, awesome.

The Giants only manged to gain 352 yards on 90, yes 90, plays.

2nd half drive summary:

Only chances they had to score were because of Kyle William's fumbles.

It's probably best for everyone that Kyle Williams is cut. He's a completely ####### useless football player anyway, and was so even before he cost the 49ers a Super Bowl. Now he also could be murdered in cold blood and his killer wouldn't be convicted in Northern California.

I'm racking my brain... I can't think of anybody even in the same ballpark of goat in Bay Area sports history.

Sure the Pats will be favored by a FG or so, but I like the Giants in this game. They should be able to put consistent pressure on Brady, and Manning & Co. will be able to score enough points to win.
   2498. Darren Posted: January 22, 2012 at 11:56 PM (#4042808)

That's what kills me Darren.

I mean, Alex Smith had a total nightmare of a second half, but Eli didn't do a thing that wasn't handed to him on a platter either. They could conceivably have won that game 14-10.
