Rabbi Miller: D’var Torah: Prince Fielder, Inheritance & Fatherhood

And that’s where inheritance and succession factor in. Moses wasn’t permitted the merit of taking his team, the Israelites, into the Promised Land. However, his inheritance was bequeathed to Joshua who would succeed Moses as the leader of the people. Joshua understood his role and he gave honor and respect to his predecessor. Without Moses there is no Joshua. That is how inheritance and succession work. Moses laid the groundwork and Joshua was able to complete the task.

I thought of the Moses-Joshua relationship and the Torah’s concept of inheritance and succession as I watched Prince Fielder hoist his Home Run Derby trophy high above his head. His sons flanked him on either side. His father was no where in sight. It is from his father that Prince has acquired the awesome ability to use a wooden bat and hit a small ball to distances surpassing 450 feet. Cecil wasn’t able to take his team into the Promised Land, but his progeny might be the leader to do it. Prince has that inheritance. He succeeds his father as the home run slugging first baseman who can lead his people to victory.

Seeing Cecil Fielder proudly standing next to his son and two grandsons Tuesday night would have made that photo even better. But there’s a fractured relationship between the father and the son. No one knows for certain why Prince and Cecil don’t talk, but the dynamics of a father-son relationship can be complicated. Perhaps the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship are better documented, but they are no more challenging.

Thanks to Barnald.

I always thought it was pretty clear why they don't talk. Dad swiped a big chunk of Prince's signing bonus without asking.

My understanding was that the signing bonus thing was also not a one-off transgression.

The Rabbi does mention the signing bonus thing in TFA. Speaking of TFA, that is one wired and semi-creepy blog post.

It takes a religious man to show us how to forgive. Simply combine a bunch of ancient religious principles made up by some equally delusional man with a gross lack of understanding of the persons actual situation, and say forgive!

we've been here before - the problem between prince and cecil isn't just over a measly theft of 200 large but cecil's physical/emotional abuse of prince's mother and sister, lying, irresponsibility etc

seems i remember in the Old Testament that fathers can disinherit/deny their children.

seems to me that the child should have the same right

me, i'm waiting for a casey candaele who inherited his baseball talent from his MOTHER to stand up there with her (see dontrelle willis who, unfortunately, never won a HR derby)

the fracturing of prince/cecil was a 20 year effort by cecil. eventually prince said 'enough'

i give prince a lot of credit for putting up with all these people who claim to know how he should handle it. he's a lot gentler about it than i would be that's for certain

Whenever I have personal issues, I always rush to take unasked for advice from a total stranger who knows nothing about me or my family. I am sure Prince Fielder cannot wait to do the same.

Getting this back to the safer topic of religion ... :-)

What's interesting (to me at least) about Moses to Joshua is that Joshua is not Moses's son. Rather than inheritance via lineage,
Moses to Joshua is a story of mentoring and (within the context of being chosen by god) meritocracy.

My understanding is that Cecil was not much responsible for the "mentoring" of Prince the baseball player. Moreover, if anything, the Moses to Joshua story would seem to argue for the wisdom of not relying on lineage for "inheritance." The logical conclusion is that the legacy that Prince would be trying to complete is that of his mentors, not Cecil's legacy.

A better example of what the rabbi seems to be trying to say would be Barry and Bobby Bonds. Barry (pretty clearly) was trying to complete his father's "vision."

(not that anything I said really has anything to do with religion but if you're gonna try to find biblical relevance in baseball, I think you should at least get things right.)

Worst d'var I've ever read. And un-Jewish at that.

Really? And even if this crock of crap were true, Prince owes something to Cecil because of genetics?

Someone get the rabbi some tapes of the 1990s Mariners, so he can watch the Griffeys playing together and feel good about life. And then he can leave Prince Fielder alone.

No, if you want to feel good about life you just look at this picture. So good.
