Ramirez, Marlins close on 6 year, $70 million deal

“As we get closer to the stadium, those things will change,” owner Jeffrey Loria said in March.

Now it’s likely Ramirez will still be with the Marlins when they move into the new ballpark in 2011. His deal would be the most lucrative in franchise history, topping the $61 million, six-year contract Gary Sheffield signed in 1997.

So… he’ll get traded after the Marlins win the 2009 World Series?

Probably. This contract just makes him more tradeable. Imagine what they could get in return for a cost-controlled Hanley Ramirez.

This is an excellent deal for the Marlins. Look at what Howard got in his first year in arbitration.

Someone younger, cheaper, and probably not as good?

Russlan, I had the same take in the other thread. If the average annual pay of your 6-year is less than you would get in your first year of arbitration, you probably aimed too low. Of course, in Hanley's shoes, it'd be hard to turn down $70 mil when you've made $1 mil or so in your career so far.

No, a whole bunch of people younger, cheaper, and probably not as good, is what I meant.

Hanley can be hit by a bus after this deal is signed and barely be able to walk a year afterwards and be set for life. and i mean REALLY set. that sort of security is worth a bunch of millions.
