Rangers could be changing Triple A and High A affiliates

The end is near for the Rangers’ affiliations with minor-league squads in Oklahoma City and Bakersfield, Calif., and Round Rock and Myrtle Beach, S.C., could be on the horizon.

The Rangers announced their plans to stay with three minor-league affiliates through at least 2012, but noticeably absent from the news release were plans for their Triple A and High A squads.

It’s all but certain that agreements with Oklahoma City and Bakersfield won’t be extended, according to sources, and those clubs will be on the move to franchises owned by Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg.

Currently "living" in Bakersfield - I can tell you all that the ballpark is a bit of a mess and the affiliation has changed frequently since the Dodgers let it go a decade or so ago.

If there were a facility to move to, Bakersfield might be the team to leave (provided Sam Lynn doesn't get serious upgrades soon, which isn't happening - right?)

There is no question that the Rangers will end the OKC affiliation in favor of Round Rock. Reportedly, Nolan Ryan had already informed Drayton McLane (since RR is currently an Astros affiliate) that this would occur if the Ryan-Greenburg group gained ownership of the Rangers. The Austin American Statesman reported that a source with the RR Express said that the changeover would occur very quickly after the AAA season (or post-season)is over.

So what does Houston do next? Go to Oklahoma City, which would seem most likely? Has Florida re-upped with New Orleans, where the Astros once had an affiliate? (New Orleans would seem to have more of an affinity toward the Astros than OKC, which leads toward Dallas-Fort Worth.)

New Orleans recently extended their PDC with the Marlins through 2012. You can find the list of AAA affiliates potentially up for grabs here.

It's slim pickings right now, especially once you consider the teams that are likely to extend their current agreements and just haven't done so yet (i.e. Boston and Pawtucket). It doesn't look like there will be much affiliate shuffling at the AAA level this offseason.

The assumption on Astros blogs all season has been that Round Rock goes to the Rangers, and the Astros will end up with OKC.

Telling note that Round Rock is going to the Rangers. The Astros and the Ryan-owned Corpus Christi Hooks extended their PDC this summer (Rangers do not want to give up the "local" affiliate in Frisco). But no extension for Round Rock.

I said this in a different thread, but if OKC wants the Astros, i've got to think Houston will move there - it's a good get + close to home.

That seemed like an odd conflict of interest situation, where the Rangers' president also was a part owner the Astros' AAA team. Is this normal?

ryan is DEFINITELY throwing the astros out of roundrock
it is really a big blow to us - the austin market is pretty heavily astros and they are going to broadcast rangers games on foxsports instead of astros.

looks like we are gonna be stuck with oklahoma, which is a bad thing.

we're keeping corpus because it is a tiny market and nolan doesn't care one bit.

it's too bad we can't move into san antonio, but the AA owner there doesn't want to sell or move.

ptt...looks to me like OKC is going to 'be stuck' with a Houston (errp) farm team.

The agreement with Pawtucket is up? I wonder if they're planning to move the AAA team closer to Boston--it'd surely do really well among the people who get shut out from seeing the big club.

Pawtucket is 40 minutes from Boston, that's been the entire raison d'etre of the PawSox since they started.

There is zero chance the Red Sox leave Pawtucket.

Do any Primates know the situation between the White Sox and the Charlotte Knights? Other than Pawtucket, Charlotte is the only International League team that doesn't have a PDC in place for 2011-2012. Are the White Sox interested in leaving?

Currently "living" in Bakersfield

My condolences.
