Ray Knight: Pirates worst defensive team seen in 13 years

I don’t know that I know a manager in Major League baseball that plays the infield in, ah, in the second inning with runners at second and third. You usually have the infield back - and this allowed a two-rbi single. Because, if [Sanchez is] back, he’s able to make this play and at least knock the ball down at second base. But, that’s a strange play…

Would Jim Tracy have done that? Or Lloyd McClendon? Or any National League manager in the last, oh let’s say, five decades?

In the same post, Ray Knight is heard quoting a ‘coach’ saying the Pirates are worst defensive team seen in thirteen years.

Poor Dan Fox.

That's a great point about the infield in last night. That had me confused. I'm not sure I've ever seen that that early in the game with runners on 2/3. It stunk at the time before we knew what would happen, and it stunk worse after the fact.

Still, I'll take it!

(Dunno about the quality of the Pirates defense, but I sure did like all those balls rolling past Gomez last night)

Having seen both teams, my admittedly small-sample impression is that Florida's defense is worse. What do the numbers say so far?

I think I recall Buddy Bell doing that once or twice, and his record speaks for itself.

I see it a lot in the minors, and I don't understand it either.

What made even less sense in that situation was who was at bat: Wil Nieves (who's been hot, but he's Wil freakin' Nieves) and the pitcher.

Worst case scenario with the infield back is 1 run in and the top of the order leading off next inning.

FWIW, both BP and bb-ref have the Bucs last in NL defensive efficiency so far.

the Bucs [are] last in NL defensive efficiency

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers...?

Florida has the 'talent' to be terrible at D this season.
