Rays acquire Ryan Roberts from Diamondbacks

The Rays’ gift shop was out of “Bortnick” license plates.

The Rays have acquired utility infielder Ryan Roberts from the Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league second baseman Tyler Bortnick, the clubs announced.

Roberts, 32 in September, was designated for assignment earlier today in what was a procedural move to clear space on Arizona’s 40-man roster. The right-handed hitter owns a .250/.330/.398 career batting line in 1,288 plate appearances…

Bortnick, 25, was a 16th-round pick of the Rays in 2009 and has posted a career minor league batting line of .289/.396/.431 in 1,773 plate appearances, none above the Double-A level.

To make room for Roberts, the Rays to no one's surprise DFA'd the washed-up Hideki Matsui.

Maybe they would like to add Jon Rauch so that Roberts has someone to discuss neck tattoos with.

I'm sorry, my name is also "Bortnick."

Pretty good career for a guy who didn't debut until he was 29

I once saw a cartoon called "what your tattoo placement says about you." For neck tattoos, the comment was "I have never paid income tax."

Now if the Dbacks traded for Glen Burtnick, that would be exciting.

Nice move Towerss. Trade a cheap super utility player with two more years of team control fir nothing, nada, zip.

Now go throw more money at McDonald or Bloomquist to satisfy your fetish for gray hairs.

Uh, would you have bothered offering arbitration this winter to a 32 year old utility IF with a 74 OPS+ making 2 million? I sure wouldn't.

Yes, I would offer arb to a guy who is super useful over multiple positions and who has been an above average player during his career, coming off a down year that will depress his arb award. If you don't like the arb award, cut him.

But much better, I'd try to lock him up for a couple years using the down year to do it cheap.

You realize Towers gave over $4m to two 50 OPS+ utility guys just this offseason, don't you?

Or that the team was 5 games out? And just gave up a useful player who has a great chance st a rebounding for nothing?

A comedian I follow on Twitter once wrote "Every neck tattoo should say, 'I didn't get the job, did I.'"
