Rays Make Roster Cuts, Nearing Final 25-Man Roster

Most notably, they informed Dan Jennings and Daniel Hudson that they would not make the 25-man roster.  The Rays have said that they plan on having resolution for the two players within 24-48 hours.

I know Jennings was kind of rough after the trade last year, but it still seems weird for him to not even make the 25-man roster. You have to think there's somebody out there who can use a groundball-oriented lefty with a strong track record.

I guess this is maybe a consequence of the whole "bullpen start" thing?

Also disappointing to see them cutting bait on one-half of the return for Corey Dickerson, and likely getting stuck with the salary -- almost as much as they'd have paid Dickerson -- to boot.

I think the Dickerson trade had more to do with them getting Gray, and if they were able to rehab Hudson into a commodity that was flippable for value, so much the better.

Yeah, cut the most expensive guys. Sure.

Vlad - I guess you're right. But it's frustrating to me because it seems like the Rays are stacked with middle infield types right now. (Four of their top 10, acc. to Sickels' lists posted last week.) That includes their #1, Adames, who excelled in AAA last year at age 22. Gray's 21 and was in low-A last year.

I'd hoped they'd get more for Dickerson than a rehab case/salary swap and a guy who's blocked by better prospects.

The guy's not even in their top-30 prospects. I think that's a bigger problem than him being blocked.

Yeah. Gray began last year in college - he's an interesting flyer, but that's it at this point/

Snapper, well, yeah, exactly. I'm saying, even if they think he's good (and Sickels has him as a C+ iirc), he doesn't have a place in the organization. But he's not that good. And they have Adames, and Arroyo and Solak -- whom they just picked up this same off-season. This team's desperate for power and should be looking at 1B/corner OF prospects.

Did Dalton Kelly make the cut? He’s a guy I like for no good reason.

Someone like Corey Dickerson would be useful.

Full circle. Ha.

IF you wanted a stopgap 1B/OF option, there are a handful available now on the cheap - Vargas is bouncing around waivers, Choi might be made available and Aguilar probably will, Mike Ford just returned to the Yanks on waivers, etcetera. Those aren't stashable projects but minimum to low wage guys who are probably above replacement level but below average and who will be cost controlled for years.

If we are talking -prospects-, well, those cost something. In the case of a DFA'd guy, they might cost a team's 38th best prospect... in which case, position doesn't mean much - just can you develop them into something more.

Yeah, but that was an unforced error. The Rays had no reason to DFA Dickerson. They could use him, and they didn't even save much money.

FWIW, Brian Crawford's projection system likes Gray a lot - he's posted about him a fair bit on BD.

So does KATOH, for that matter.

So do I!... relative to his draft slot/bonus and experience. But I still think he's probably just a guy and the track record of offensive MI from Rice isn't very good as they move up the ladder, as I recall.

I don't think DFA'ing Dickerson was a good idea either (absent something like interpersonal stuff) and thought he was a great pickup for the price. That said, it's interesting that they didn't get a better off elsewhere.

Not once they DFA'd him. The other teams were all going to look for a steal at that point.

Impatient sellers rarely get a good price.

It's actually not terrible. Anthony Rendon is a star, and Brock Holt turned into a nice UT IF.

16 - I honestly don't think that made that much difference.
17 - Well, Rendon was a wholly different caliber of player. Gray's college numbers are more akin to Paul Janish (who has had a nice career, but because of his glove), Brian Friday, Enrique Cruz ...(and don't get me started on Damon Thames). Tiny bit I've seen of him, I liked his swing - and think there's maybe more power to unlock.
