Rays reliever Kolarek plays 1B in 3-0 win over Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash keeps getting the most from his pitching staff.

Cash moved reliever Adam Kolarek from the mound to first base and back to the mound in a piece of matchup strategy Sunday, and the Rays wound up with a 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Yandy Diaz homered on the second pitch of the game and Yonny Chirinos (2-0) threw five scoreless innings. The Rays have opened the season with three straight series wins for the first time in franchise history.

Cash kept things in constant motion throughout the game, using four outfielders at times and constantly shifting his infielders. But his boldest move came in the seventh.

Tampa Bay keeps on innovating.

I thought they did that a few times last year too.

I'm torn. Don't like the ROOGY usage, but I think this is pretty cool.

If only there were a convenient website where one could look it up.

Jose Alvarado played 1B for one batter. Sergio Romo 3B for one batter. B-R credits Hunter Wood with a game at DH but I think he just pinch-ran for the DH in a walk-off inning.

There was a huge fight during my fantasy team about whether acquiring TB pitchers was a good idea given what the league counts on pitcher stats. I was for it as I bid on and got Alvarado for I think 5 bucks which I thought was great but others thought I was an idiot. Really surprised the guy has 4 saves but loving this while it lasts. I knew he threw hard and would get plenty of chances even if he sucked because it's the Rays so figured why not. Wish he didn't walk so many guys but that's minor when you are striking out 15 per 9 pace.

But his boldest move came in the seventh.

Kolarek pitched a perfect sixth inning to protect a 2-0 lead. The left-hander gave up a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Yangervis Solarte, then shifted over to play first base — it was his first time in the majors at a position other than pitcher, and allowed the Rays to bring in right-hander reliever Chaz Roe.

Roe struck out righty-hitting Evan Longoria and exited. Kolarek returned to the mound, struck out lefty-swinging Brandon Belt, gave up another single and was replaced for good by Diego Castillo.

By rule, Kolarek either had to finish pitching the inning or leave the game before the end of the inning, and did the latter, once he returned to the mound.

Rule 5.10(d) Comment: A pitcher may change to another position only once during the same inning; e.g. the pitcher will not be allowed to assume a position other than a pitcher more than once in the same inning. [...]

Bryan Mitchell for the Yankees, as well, two years ago. Dropped a ball for an error, then gave up the winning run.

1B would not be my first choice for hiding a pitcher. Maybe if the guy played it in college.
