Rays To Acquire Ryan Hanigan

Man, this is gonna be frameariffic.

The Reds are trading catcher Ryan Hanigan to the Rays, sources tell Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link).  The swap could be a three-way deal.

It was expected that Cincinnati would move Hanigan since they agreed to a two-year deal with Brayan Pena…

Hanigan will give the Rays three catchers with Jose Lobaton and Jose Molina already in the fold…

Hanigan… has a reputation as a solid defensive backstop, having led the league in caught-stealing percentage in 2013 (45 percent) and 2012 (48 percent).

Is Pena likely to be better than Hanigan going forward? I find that to be a suspect proposition. I guess it depends on how much of Hanigan's off year was an off year or indication of a true decline or not. I mean they are roughly a year apart in age, and Hanigan has been the much better player.

maybe the Cardinals are involved as the third team, I would much rather have Hanigan as a backup than Cruz.

Were this trade and the AJ Pierzynski signing related to each other? Is that why they're announced simultaneously?

There has been a flurry of activity this winter regarding catchers. Its odd.

He's got a great name for a limerick.

Something something Hanigan
Something something man again

I'll figure it out...

And Eli Whiteside has only changed teams once so far!

And we didn't even get a thread (that I recall) about Chris Stewart begin reunited with Russell Martin....

It wouldn't shock me if the Rays were in on Pierzynski and when they missed out they went for Hanigan.

Pitch framing is was the new market inefficiency.

D'Backs are the third team involved.

Seeing mentions of Lobaton to AZ.

Also reading speculation of the Dbacks using this trade to clear up the Didi/Owings logjam at SS.

I don't think there's any question Hanigan's a better player now and in the future.

2nd sentence A: And Pena isn't being paid like he'll be better - less than $2.3M over the next 2 years, or about what Hanigan is likely to get via arbitration for just this year. EDIT: (via twitter) Hanigan has signed for 3/$11.

2nd sentences B: But the Reds have committed to Mesoraco as the everyday catcher; Pena is just the back-up. Hanigan has lots of trade value because he's seen as a starter.

AZ Republic beat writer @nickpiecoro saying Heath Bell may be involved.

Ryan Hanigan and Heath Bell and cash to the Rays
P David Holmberg to the Reds
P Justin Choate and a PTBNL to the D'Backs
   14. Greg K Posted: December 03, 2013 at 03:54 PM (#4609725)
Not sure what the DBacks are getting.

I think they are winning the trade by landing a player not named Heath Bell to be named later.

there once was a fella named hanigan

whose resume was deemed a shenanigan

his walks and his catching

were not regarding as fetching

but to the rays he was quite the handy man

Word is Lobaton is headed to the White Sox.

I like it Harveys, but let's ratchet up the filth a couple of notches!

There once was a catcher named Hanigan
who got hit in the nuts with a ball again
he went to the hospital
to be fit with a testicle
and now his wife says he's a man again
   18. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:06 PM (#4609739)
shooty

not a competition but the repeated use of 'again' detracts from the overall quality

and 'nuts'? really?

as per the usual Harveys wins the thread

Really sucked at pitching
He sucked, sucked, sucked, sucked at pitching.

very subtle though

And the Rays immediately give Hanigan 3/11. That was quick.

One of my dad's really good friends coached Stewart in travel ball. The last time I saw Scott (dad's friend) I told him that I figured Chris wouldn't be catching for the Yankees next year, but 2013 guaranteed him a job for a long time.

Well, I didn't want to use "balls" twice in one line. I can work on the last line. It needs to be dirtier, anyway.

"Ball" doesn't rhyme with "Han".

GO AWAY!

there once was a fella named hanigan
whose male pride was a known talisman
every female he bedded
would beg to be wedded
but he far preferred the role of serviceman
   28. spycake Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:18 PM (#4609761)
Hanigan has more BB than SO in each of his MLB seasons, save for 11 PA in 2007 (when he unfortunately finished with 1 BB vs 2 SO).
   29. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:20 PM (#4609764)
spy

hanigan has a very subtle skill set. that and he cannot play against righties with good fastballs as he gets overpowered.

but put him in against junkballers or lefties and he can hold his own. that's 200-300 plate appearances a year if you spot him properly
   30. PreservedFish Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:28 PM (#4609772)
I once knew a catcher named Hanigan
Rendered runners as still as a mannequin
He loved Thai burlesque
Those girls did things grotesque
I don't think I can ever eat spam again

There once was a catcher named Hanigan.
To fans he was the ultimate Yannigan.
Then he stepped to the plate.
And won the game late.
Now the fans think he is the Man again.

To successfully steal against Hanigan,
His opponents just ran and then ran again,
Till the day came about
That he threw someone out.
Now let's talk about Alyson Hannigan.
   35. PreservedFish Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:54 PM (#4609802)
Have you heard of the man known as Hanigan?
Lubricated his conquests with lanolin.
His #### was gigantic,
The thrusting volcanic,
Ungreased the result was quite damagin'.

Rays are paying quite a bit for a bad relief pitcher and a backup catcher but it's mostly cash.
   37. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: December 03, 2013 at 05:22 PM (#4609829)
I'm hoping the Rays keep all three catchers on their roster all year, and just treat that spot in the lineup like National League teams use the pitcher's spot.
   38. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: December 03, 2013 at 05:24 PM (#4609835)
Heath Bell will earn $9,000,000 for the 2014 season.

The Diamondbacks are paying him $500,000.
The Marlins are paying him $3,000,000.
The Rays are paying him $5,500,000.

davo

heath bell's agent should be commended

wow
   40. JE (Jason) Posted: December 03, 2013 at 06:12 PM (#4609890)
DL: Bell did pretty well last season in offense-friendly Chase Field. For example, his K/9 rate was nearly 10 and BB/9 rate was a little over 2.
   41. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: December 03, 2013 at 06:25 PM (#4609901)
And look, the Rays are batting 1.000 on these type of veteran reliever reclamation projects, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they can fix Bell's problems with the gopher ball.
   42. Jim Wisinski Posted: December 03, 2013 at 07:07 PM (#4609948)
It's not a move that creates a lot of excitement (though I agree with #41 that there's a good chance Bell will have a good season for the Rays) but Hanigan is probably going to be a solid catcher for the team. I worry that they're keeping the wrong Jose though, Molina isn't an elite defender any more and odds for an offensive resurgence at 39 are....not great. Pitch framing and staff handling is all he brings to the table these days, I hope it's enough. Not that Lobaton is anything special, he's not a strong defender either and probably won't reach a 100 OPS+ again but at least he's relatively young.

Baseman running on Ryan
Returned to the dugout cryin'
They said "Damn that Hanigan,
He threw me out again.
And our rallies seem to be dyin'"
